Selection Sunday for District College Football Teams

It is Selection Sunday for the NCAA Division II playoffs and it was a good day for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference as for the second straight year, the PSAC filled four of the six playoff spots in Super Region One.

Kutztown(10-1) who did not play in the PSAC title game was awarded the number one seed in the region. Mercyhurst(9-2), who won the PSAC title game over Bloomsburg 56-37 yesterday, is the number two seed. The Golden Bears defeated the Lakers 35-14 at home on September 11th.

California(10-1) is the third seed and the only team in the region to make it back to the post-season. The Vulcans will host sixth seeded and PSAC East champion Bloomsburg(9-2) on Saturday, time to be determined. That game is a rematch of the 2008 regional final. Cal has won the region the last three seasons, Its's the fourth straight playoff appearance for Cal, Bloomsburg makes it's eighth NCAA appearance, and second in the last three years. The winner of that game will travel to Erie and a rematch with the Lakers on November 27th.

The other first round matchup will have CIAA champion Shaw(9-2) traveling to WVIAC champion Shepherd(9-1) who were upset yesterday by Glenville State 28-24. Shepherd had entered the final week of the regular season as the top ranked team in the region. Saturday's winner travels to Kutztown next week.

In Division III, W & J was not selected for the Division III field, ending a six year streak. The Presidents will likely be selected for an ECAC South bowl bid. PAC champion Thomas More was selected for the field, the ninth ranked Saints finished the regular season at 10-0, as a three seed, the Saints will host Washington and Lee(8-2) on Saturday.
