District College Football Recap for Saturday, November 13th

A first time champion was crowned in the PSAC and three more teams from that conference await the NCAA Division II Selection Show Sunday afternoon to see if they are post-season bound. A mild upset highlights the final week in the NEC, and Rivarly Week in the PAC brings two overtime games and two more down to the wire to wind up the regular season.

Here are recaps of all the games, including three heard here on the MSA Sports Network:

C. W. Post 42 – Slippery Rock 38

Last week there was snow and ice, this week it was over sixty degrees at kickoff at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium, but whatever the weather, the Rock could not come up with a home win to end the season.

The Rock fell once again in the final minutes. Slippery Rock took their first lead of the game with just over two minutes remaining on a C. J. Bahr 37 yard field goal, but Eric Anderwkavich threw a 63 yard touchdown to Joe Botti to put the Pioneers back on top for good.

The lighting up of the scoreboard started with 35 points combined in the first quarter. Anderwkavich found Grayson Laurino wide open for a 46 yard touchdown, 62 seconds into the game. Slippery Rock answered with an Akeem Satterfield 30 yard run two minutes later. Anthony Brunetti put C. W. Post back up with a two yard run, but Satterfield scored his second touchdown on a 34 yarder. Brunetti scored his second touchdown on a one yard run to go back up 21-14 after one.

The score remained the same until Ryan Sabo tied it on a one yard run, but Anderwkavich and Laurino connected again for a score to put the Pioneers back up 28-21 at halftime.

In the third, a twelve yard touchdown pass from Anderwkavich to Darnel Williams put the Pioneers up 35-21, Satterfield scored his third touchdown of the game on an eight yard run, the extra point was blocked.

The Rock continued the rally in the fourth, after a Paul Stoltz miss on a 31 yard field goal attempt, Satterfield ran for his fourth touchdown, from seven yards, and Sabo hit Josh Gardner for a two-pointer to tie the game at 35 at the midpoint of the fourth quarter, setting the stage for the final three minutes.

For C. W. Post, Anderwkavich threw for 314 yards on 18 of 25. Laurino had five catches for 128 yards, Botti finished with three catches for 109. The Pioneers end the season at 7-4, the win also gives head coach Bryan Collins his 100th career win.

The Rock was led by Satterfield's career high 271 yards on 46 carries, he finished with twenty touchdowns and 1,352 yards rushing. Sabo was 17 of 29 for 168 and two interceptions. Slippery Rock ends the season at 6-5.

Washington & Jefferson 31 – Waynesburg 30 in Overtime

In the PAC Backyard Brawl, the Yellow Jackets rolled the dice and came up empty, choosing to go for two in the first overtime and the win.

The teams traded early field goals, Waynesburg took a 10-3 lead in the second on a Brad Dawson six yard pass to Mike Ferraro. The score stayed that way until the third when Gino Rometo tied the game on a one yard run. W & J took the lead on their next possession on a Tim McNerney two yard plunge, McNerney scored on a 55 yard run with 28 seconds left in the third to give the Presidents a 24-10 lead.

After the teams traded fumbles to start the fourth, Kyle Kyper took a 24 yard pass from Dawson to cut the lead to seven with 10:32 left. On their next series, the Yellow Jackets, led down the field by Dawson with two big gainers, scored on a yard run by Dominic Moore to tie the game at 24.

W & J went on a five minute drive, but Colin Kracinovsky missed a forty yard field goal with 2:17 remaining. Waynesburg drove to the W & J 22 but Jon Storck missed his 39 yard atttempt wide right on the final play of regulation.

In overtime, Waynesburg won the toss and elected to play defense. W & J wasted little time as Rometo hit Jordan Roycroft for the 25 yard touchdown and a seven point lead with the extra point. Waynesburg scored on their third play of overtime, Dawson to Adam Moses from 21 yards. The decision was made to go for two, and after a W & J timeout, Ryan Williams failed to score on the run, giving the win to W & J.

For the Presidents, McNerney ran for 107 yards on 23 carries. Rometo was 25 of 35 for 293 yards. Roycroft had ten catches for 139 yards. W & J ends the season at 8-2 overall and 6-1 in the PAC. It is unlikely the Presidents will get a bid to the post-season, W & J was not ranked in the regional rankings released last week.

The Yellow Jackets were led by Dawson, who threw for 299 yards on 32 of 46. Waynesburg ends the season at 6-4 and 4-3 in the PAC, dropping two straight games.

Geneva 30 – Westminster 24 in Triple Overtime

In the 113th edition of "The Game", Gerald Muschette became the all-time leading rusher in Geneva history and scored from 17 yards out in the third overtime to give Geneva the win and break a home losing streak.

Geneva scored first when Adam Rose scooped up a John Proano fumble and took it 81 yards to the house and a 7-0 GT first quarter lead. It stayed that way until 6:29 left in the half, when Shawn Lehocky scored on a one yard run, the short field set up by a Joe Ross twenty yard punt return.

Westminster took the lead in the third on a Tyler Banks 32 yard run for a score, putting the Titans up 14-7. On the first drive of the fourth quarter for Geneva, Muschette put the team on his back, with three runs totaling 38 yards. David Girardi hit Pat Matty for a twelve yard touchdown with 11:05 remaining. The Titans had two opportunities to take the lead again but turned the ball over on downs at the Geneva 32 with four minutes to play. On the next play, Jordan Rooney intercepted Girardi, setting up the Titans at the 32 once again. This time Westminster got points, Zac Henry kicked a 44 yard field goal with 2:23 left to put Westminster up 17-14.

Geneva drove to the Westminster two yard line, but rather than going for the win, coach Geno DeMarco elected to kick, Nick DiPietro hit a 20 yard field goal to again tie the game with fourteen seconds left. Westminster did have a chance to win, Kyle Allen returned the kickoff to the 46 with seven seconds left. Lehocky hit Austin Cope for 18 yards and Cope got out of bounds at the Geneva 36, bringing on Henry for a 53 yard attempt. Henry came up short and overtime was next.

In the first overtime, Westminster went on offense first and stalled out. Henry attempted a 46 yarder, he again came up short. Geneva needed just a field goal to win, but DiPietro hit the left upright with a 36 yard attempt, sending the game to a second overtime.

Geneva got the ball first and scored after taking a delay of game penalty, Girardi threw a 30 yard touchdown pass to Corey O'Patchen. Lehocky knoted the game again, finding Jesse Sylvester for a five yard touchdown, the extra point sent the game to a third overtime. Westminster went on offense first and struggled, Henry tried a 24 yard field goal, but it was blocked by Adam Rose. Muschette scored two plays later to end it.

Muschette ran for 190 yards on 33 carries. Girardi threw for 147 yards and two scores. Geneva finishes at 5-5.

For Westminster, Proano ran for 125 yards on 32 carries. The Titans finish at 2-8.

PSAC State Title Game
Mercyhurst 56 – Bloomsburg 37
The Mercyhurst Lakers never looked back, leading by eighteen points at half en route to their first ever PSAC championship in only the third year for the Lakers in the conference. With the win, Mercyhurst likely clinches a berth in the Division II playoff field to be announced later Sunday. The 16th ranked Lakers jumped out to the early lead by using the big play. Travis Rearick connected with Terrance Coon for 61 yards for the opening score. Following a Bloomsburg field goal of 26 yards by Dan Fisher, Rearick hit Matt Mohr from 28 yards out to go up 14-3. Franklyn Quiteh, the leading rusher in Division II entering the game, scored late in the quarter from 32 yards to cut the Mercyhurst lead to four. In the second, Rearick picked up right where he left off, finding Ryan Bartizal on a four yarder for his third touchdown pass of the day, putting the Lakers up 21-10. Then Trevor Kennedy took over for Mercyhurst. Kennedy scored on a 78 yard punt return for an 18 point lead. Bloomsburg, ranked 11th in the AFCA poll entering this week, answered on a Pat Carey 36 yard strike to Kyle Fisher, but with just over a minute to play in the half, Kennedy scored on a Rearick pass, totaling 81 yards and a 35-17 halftime lead. In the third quarter, Kevin Williams sealed the win for the Lakers, taking a Carey pass 28 yards for a Pick Six. Carey scored on a five yard run, but Mercyhurst led 42-24 after three. The fourth quarter saw four touchdowns, Carey and Fisher connected for 76 yards to cut the lead to twelve. Gerald Anderson answered that with a one yard run with 8:02 remaining to extend the lead to 49-30. But the Huskies did not go away, scoring 97 seconds later on a Carey 23 yard pass to Tyler Guise. Kennedy put the icing on the cake with a 17 yard touchdown reception from Garrett Kensy to close the scoring. Kennedy was named the game's MVP, catching eleven passes for 163 yards, he returned three punts for 89 yards and completed a pass for 56 yards, plus the three touchdowns. Rearick ended 20 of 30 for 345 yards and four touchdowns. Mercyhurst is now 9-2 overall. For Bloomsburg, Quiteh gained 104 yards on 16 carries before leaving in the third quarter with an undisclosed injury. It was his tenth 100 yard game on the season. Carey threw for 311 yards and three scores, Fisher had six catches for 151 yards and the two scores. Bloomsburg is now 9-2 and will wait to see if they will also qualify for the Division II playoffs. Bloomsburg entered the game second in the Super Region 1 rankings, Mercyhurst was fourth. Four PSAC teams filled the six spots last season, and it is quite possible that will happen again.

Bryant 27 – Robert Morris 21
One week after moving into the Division I FCS rankings at number 25, the Colonials are likely to fall out of the top ten with the road loss to the Bulldogs. Robert Morris had already clinched the NEC title and automatic bid to the playoffs, but was looking to run the table in conference play. Robert Morris scored first as Jeff Sinclair hit Anthony Coleman for a 16 yard touchdown in the first quarter, the lead was short-lived as Jordan Brown answered with a three yard run to tie the game, and Sinclair was picked off by A Lynch for a 43 yard Pick Six and a 13-7 Bryant lead after one. The Bulldogs got another defensive touchdown in the second, S. Wagstaff took a Sinclair pick 80 yards to the house. Raphael Johnson put RMU back on the board with a one yard run in the third, but Brown answered two minutes later with a three yard run. Sinclair hit Jeff Link for a six yard touchdown with 5:10 remaining in regulation, but it was too little. For Robert Morris, Myles Russ ran for 109 yards on 22 totes. Sinclair was picked three times, he went 15 of 37 for 159 yards. The Colonials end the regular season at 8-2 overall and finish 7-1 in conference play. The Bulldogs were led by Brown with 138 yards on 28 carries. Bryant finishes 7-3 overall and 4-3 in the conference.

Kutztown 27 – Gannon 24
Kutztown started the week, ranked 20th in the AFCA poll but third in the regional rankings. The win likely puts the Golden Bears, now 10-1, into the post-season, but they had to hold on for dear life as Gannon scored three touchdowns to try for the upset. The Golden Knights knocked Bloomsburg out of playoff contention in the final week of 2009. The Golden Bears took the lead on a Kendell Coleman four yard run in the first quarter. Jeremy Ditzler kicked a 44 yard field goal to cut the lead to 7-3 early in the second. Kutztown scored twice more before halftime, Kevin Morton threw a five yard pass to Colby Tuell and Josh Mastromatt scored on a five yard run for a 20-3 halftime lead. Morton hit Josh Smith with a 32 yard touchdown on the opening drive of the third to go up 27-3. The Golden Eagles turned up the offense, going 64 yards in 14 plays, quarterback Zach Boedicker scoring from five yards out to make it 27-10 after three. Tyler Batts scored on the first play of the fourth from two yards, cutting the Kutztown lead to ten. After the teams traded interceptions, Boedicker hit Geoff Hicks for a twenty yard score, whittling the lead to three. Gannon drove into Kutztown territory twice more, but turned the ball over on downs on both possessions. Morton threw for 288 yards on 23 of 32, he was picked off once and sacked eight times. Smith had eight catches for 105 yards, Erik Fraizer had five catches for 111 yards. Boedicker ran for 110 yards on 11 carries, he threw for 276 yards on 28 of 56, with three interceptions. Gannon ends the season at 6-5 for the second consecutive year.

California 57 – Cheyney 6
The Vulcans entered the game ranked number ten in the AFCA Division II poll but fifth in the NCAA regional rankings. Cal did nothing to harm those numbers and likely are assured another post-season trip at 10-1 overall. Josh Portis threw for 210 yards and five touchdowns as Cal hopes to make it's fourth consecutive playoff trip, the Vulcans have made the semifinals three straight years. Cal led 24-0 at the half. Portis opened the scoring with an eleven yard pass to Chedrick Cherry. Marc Domonkos kicked a 20 yard field goal and Portis hit Terrance Moore for a 29 yard td strike, all in the first thirteen minutes. Portis connected with Derrick Jones for a ten yard score for the only points of the second quarter. John Newman got Cheyney on the board with a two yard run in the third. Domonkos kicked a 22 yard field goal and the Wolves snapped the ball over the punter's head, leading to a safety and a 29-6 lead. Cherry returned the free kick to the Cheyney 31 and Portis and Cherry hooked up on the next play for a touchdown. Cheyney went for it on fourth down at their own 36, and Cal stopped them and made them pay as the Portis-Cherry connection clicked again this time for 32 yards and another score. But Cal wasn't done in the quarter, forcing a three and out on the next series and Trey Johnson returned the punt fifty yards to the house and a 50-6 lead after three. Eric Livsey added a 28 yard Pick Six for the Vulcans in the fourth to end the rout. Cherry had six catches for 105 yards and the three scores. Marcus Jones ran for 124 yards for the Wolves, who fell to 1-10 on the season.

Duquense 41 – Saint Francis 17
Sean Patterson threw for five touchdowns as the Dukes scored 27 unanswered points for the victory. Patterson hit David Williams for scores of 79 and 10 yards, he also threw two scores to Connor Dixon of 44 and 10 yards. Patterson also ran for a score and hit Akeem Moore for a 9 yard touchdown in the fourth. Duquesne racked up 512 yards of offense in the win. Patterson went 13 of 21 for 278 yards. Dixon and Williams both had five catches, Dixon for 109 yards and Williams with an even 100. Larry McCoy ran for 101 yards on 22 carries as the Dukes end at 6-4 overall and 4-3 in the conference. For Saint Francis, Jude Yearwood scored on a two yard run, and Kyle Harbridge on a 55 yarder. Harbridge ran for 131 yards on sixteen carries. Quarterback John Kelly struggled, going 7 of 17 for 48 yards as the Red Flash lost their seventh straight. Saint Francis ends the season at 1-9 overall and 1-6 in the NEC.

Indiana State 30 – Youngstown State 24
Ronnie Fouch threw for 290 yards and four touchdowns as the Sycamores handed the Penguins their seventh straight loss to close out Missouri Valley Conference play. Alex Jones had five catches for Indiana State for 147 yards. The Sycamores end 6-4 overall and 4-3 in the conference.
Adaris Bellamy ran for 78 yards and two scores for the Penguins, Jamaine Cook added 77 yards and a score. Both Bellamy and Cook ended with eleven touchdowns on the season. Kurt Hess threw for 191 yards and was picked off four times. Domonique Barnes had ten catches for 132 yards for YSU, who ends at 3-8 overall and 1-7 in the conference.

Edinboro 28 – East Stroudsburg 25
Cody Harris threw for 257 yards and three touchdowns as the Fighting Scots close out the season at 7-4 with the win. Drew Herrell ran for 131 yards on 22 carries and James Jackson returned an interception for a twenty yard touchdown. Gary Nolen caught five passes on the day to become the all-time leader in receptions at Edinboro. Matt Marshall threw for two touchdowns for the Warriors before giving way to Ray Wagner, who threw for 178 yards but was picked twice. Ed Kiser had nine catches for 109 yards, ESU finishes at 3-8 overall.

Shippensburg 41 – Lock Haven 17
In Rocky Rees' final game as head coach of the Red Raiders, he went out a winner. Shippensburg pounded out 504 yards of offense and handed Lock Haven it's 32nd consecutive loss. Steven Adams threw four touchdown passes, two to Kevin Marshall. Adams threw for 254 yards but was picked off three times. Marshall ended the day with 63 yards rushing on 18 carries and five catches for 71 yards. Shippensburg ends at 5-6 overall. Jarrett Kratzer threw for 190 yards and a touchdown for the Bald Eagles. Jay Hartman had nine catches for 120 yards and a touchdown. Lock Haven has now had three consecutive losing seasons. Rees ends his career at Shippensburg with a 122-110-1 record there and 159 wins overall.

Clarion 49 – Millersville 10
Alfonso Hoggard finished his career at Clarion with a bang, running for 211 yards and three touchdowns as the Golden Eagles close out the season at 4-7. Ben Fiscus ran for 104 yards and two touchdowns, the freshman qb from Indiana also threw for a score. Jacques Robinson also ended his career as a Golden Eagle on a high note, the Oliver grad caught his 17th career touchdown. Bill Shirk led Millersville with 238 yards passing and a touchdown on 23 of 29. Millersville turned the ball over four times, the Marauders end the season at 2-9.

IUP 27 – West Chester 10
Fourth quarter touchdown runs for Darryl Herod and Teddy Blakeman broke open a close game as IUP finishes at 6-5 on the season with a two game winning streak. Harvie Tuck ran for 132 yards on 21 carries, Blakeman added 118 yards on 18 totes. The IUP defense only gave up 174 yards of offense to West Chester. Pat Brewster scored on a one yard run and Craig Burgess kicked two field goals to stake IUP to a 13-3 lead at the half. D'Andre Webb scored the only touchdown for the Golden Rams, who finish at 4-7.

Grove City 35 – Thiel 21
In the battle for the Mercer County Cup, Blaine Miller scored his second touchdown of the day with 3:11 to play to cement a Grove City win. The Wolverines jumped out to a 21-0 lead on a Brian Pell 15 yard run and a Ed Reith fifty yard score. Pell also threw a twenty yard td pass to Shenango grad Luke O'Hara. Jared Soell led the comeback for the Tomcats, throwing a twenty yard touchdown to Kyle Turkalj in the final minutes of the first half. Soell also scored on a pair of eight yard runs in the third to cut the lead to seven. Miller had a great day on the ground for the Wolverines, rushing for 225 yards on 33 carries. Reith added 98 yards rushing. Grove City outgained Thiel 467 to 177 but turned the ball over three times. The Wolverines finish at 5-5 overall and 3-4 in the PAC. Thiel goes winless for the season at 0-10, the Tomcats have dropped twelve straight games and have now lost four straight in the Cup battle.

Bethany 35 – Saint Vincent 28
In the Green Game, Eric Walker scored from two yards out with 3:04 remaining to give the Bison a 5-5 overall record. Matt Grimard threw for 180 yards and three scores and ran for 172 yards on 28 carries. Walker ran for 101 yards and two scores. Bethany ends PAC play at 4-3. For Saint Vincent, Aaron Smetanka threw for 326 yards and two touchdowns. Tom Quirin had five catches for 110 yards and a touchdown, Sheldon Loughner had three catches for 124 yards, he also had a touchdown. Mike Kale ran for 146 yards and two scores. The Bearcats finish at 3-7 overall, but 3-4 in the PAC.

Case Western Reserve 28 – Carnegie Mellon 0
In the 25th annual Academic Bowl, the Spartans came out on top for the fourth consecutive year, going to 8-2 on the season and finishing 1-2 in the UAA. Ford City native Derek Bush staked Case Western to a 7-0 lead with an eight yard run in the first quarter. Quarterback Joey Baum hooked up with Zach Homyk for two touchdowns, Baum hit Shawn Nicely for a third score, he finished the day 21 of 29 for 237 yards. Homyk had thirteen catches for 160 yards. For the Tartans, Bethel Park's Justin Pratt ended his career with 77 yards, he finishes in 12th place all time on the CMU rushing list. Carnegie Mellon ends 4-6 overall and 0-3 in the UAA.

Allegheny 17 – Oberlin 14
Sean Acosta scored on a four yard run and T. J. Salopek hit Rob Carlisle for an eight yard touchdown as the Gators had a 17-0 lead, until the Yeoman scored twice in the final three minutes on two Joey Zebelian touchdown passes. Salopek ends his career at Allegheny with a 283 yard day on 25 of 43. He leaves as the all-time Gator leader in total offense, passing yards, completions and attempts. Allegheny finishes at 7-3 overall and 4-2 in the NCAC. Oberlin ends the season at 4-6 overall and 3-3 in conference.
