The curtain has been raised on another high school football campaign…and Plays of the Week returns in 2010 to help keep you sane…the top plays each weekend can be found here every Tuesday…so lets get the ball rolling in celebration of the key play.
Pittsburgh Central Catholic Vikings 35 – Akron Buchtel Griffins 6
MSA Sports Don Rebel and Mike Azadian on the call
The WPIAL went 1-3 in the Rally at the Wolvarena, a four game battle of WPIAL elite teams against squad from Ohio and Florida. The lone win came when Pittsburgh Central Catholic turned to special teams to blow open a close game, sparked by this Louis Taglianetti punt block that was recovered in the end zone by Vikings teammate Brandon Farrell, giving Central Catholic a 21-6 lead en-route to a 35-6 triumph over the Griffs.
Greensburg-Salem Golden Lions 38 – Hempfield Spartans 35
WHJB-FM 107.1's Mike Mallory and Mike Buggey on the call
One of the thrillers of opening weekend came down AAAA vs AAA rivals and a big night by Greensburg-Salem quarterback Josh Falatovich, who threw three touchdown passes, including a 15-yard strike to Dan Nacey in the fourth quarter that helped lead Greensburg-Salem to a 38-35 victory over visiting Hempfield, snapping a nine-game losing streak for the Lions against the Spartans.
West Allegheny Indians 41 – South Park Eagles 0
MSA Sports Justin McKim and Josh Rowntree on the call
Obviously, the 41-0 score indicated this one was a blowout for the defending WPIAL Class AAA champions. But how this season plays out in the tough Triple-A classification may have turned late in the first quarter when 2009 MSA Sports co-player of the year Mike Caputo was injured making a tackle on defense. He dislocated his left ankle and after surgery on Saturday, there is hope the Wisconsin recruit can return to play again this fall.
Springdale Dynamos 20 – North Catholic Trojans 6
The North Catholic Sports Network's Johnny Klocko on the call
A pair of teams ranked in the top five in Class A and doing battle in a key Eastern Conference tilt made the atmosphere at Springdale High School feel more like late October rather than opening weekend. The host Dynamos never trailed thanks to the opening score, a thrilling 90-yard punt return in the second quarter by star running back Bill Arch in the Dynamos 20-6 victory over the North Catholic Trojans.
