WPIAL Week Two Saturday’s Scholastic Starz

There were not a whole lot of stars shining on the second Saturday of the WPIAL football season. No, it had nothing to do with the rainy afternoon or overcast evening. There were only three games played in District 7 on Saturday. Here are the performances that made those three contests seem very special.

Patrick O'Malley – Steel Valley

Steel Valley usually lives up to it's tough name with a tough ground attack. This year, they can now run it or chuck it…so far with early success due in part to quarterback Patrick O'Malley. Irish eyes were smiling on O'Malley in the rain Saturday afternoon when he hit on 12 of 22 passes for two touchdowns and a 3-yard scoring run to lead the Ironmen to a convincing 41-0 whitewash of the host Burgettstown Blue Devils in a Class AA Century Conference tilt.

Andrew Broaddus – Avonworth

In a Class A Eastern Conference defensive battle in the rain at Riverside Park in Oakmont, Avonworth tailback Andrew Broaddus kept taking pitch left and pitch right, slowly wearing down the Riverview defense until a spectacular run broke their collective backs. Broaddus rushed for 167 yards on 22 carries, but saved his best for last when trailing by one, he broke free from four would be tacklers, reversed his field and scored on a 20-yard run late in the fourth quarter which proved to be the difference in the Antelopes 15-8 victory over the Raiders.

Nico DiPaolo – Bishop Canevin

In a Class A Black Hill Conference struggle under the lights at Dormont Stadium, Saturday night was all right for two defenses in which yards, yet alone points, were hard to come by. Thus the play of quarterback Nico DiPaolo of Bishop Canevin stood out because he was scoring points for both teams. A safety when DiPaolo was sacked in the end zone provided half of Chartiers-Houston's points, but it was a 37-yard scoring dagger from DiPaolo to Mike Tambellini in the third quarter that proved to be the difference in the Crusaders 10-4 triumph over the Buccaneers.
