39th Annual Baldwin Invitational Track & Field Results

It’s the right arm that brings Bill Stanley notoriety. But at the Baldwin Invitational, it was footwork that helped bring Stanley into the spotlight.

Stanley, a senior at South Park High School, had one of the most unforgettable performances ever in a field event at the 39th annual Baldwin Invitational Friday. The event is one of the largest meets in the eastern part of the country and attracted more than 2,000 competitors from all over Western Pennsylvania.

Stanley was the talk of the meet after throwing the javelin 234 feet, 9 inches to set a Baldwin Invitational record and also enhance his reputation as one of the best javelin throwers in the country. But about the feet …

“I was picking up my right foot before I was throwing, so I worked on just dragging my right foot through,” Stanley said. “Everything just felt right on the last throw.”

Stanley had the impressive throw on his sixth and final attempt of the meet. He already had the championship won when he threw 223-7 on his first attempt. Stanley came into the meet with a personal-best mark of 223-1, set at last week’s Penn Relays. That was already good enough for second in the country, but then he threw more than 10 feet farther at Baldwin.

Stanley, an Ohio State recruit, has been in five invitationals this year and has set a meet record in every one. To understand the magnitude of Stanley’s terrific throw at Baldwin, you should know that the second-place finisher was about 55 feet behind at 178-11.
The only throw in the country better this year than Stanley’s is 244-1 by Sean Keller of Vancouver, Wash. Stanley seemed to be saving his strength for the Baldwin meet.

“Actually, I didn’t throw at all in practice this week,” he said. “I just worked on my technique and kept lifting weights. The WPIAL qualifiers aren’t until Tuesday and I probably won’t throw until then.”
Here is another indication of how good Stanley is doing this year: The top javelin throw on the Ohio State team this season is 203 feet, 7 inches.

While Stanley commanded attention at Baldwin throwing a spear, Hempfield’s Larisa Debich used a pole to climb to great heights. Debich, a senior and an Auburn recruit, set a meet record in the pole vault and became the first girl in WPIAL history in any meet to clear 13 feet when she cleared 13-0 ¼. Debich’s previous best was 12-10.

Debich now is tied for the third-best pole vault mark in the country.
“I started at 12 feet today,” Debich said on Friday. “I went for 13-3 after [clearing 13-0 ¼], but I was just really tired by then.”

A week earlier, Debich finished first at the prestigious Penn Relays in Philadelphia.

The meet included mostly WPIAL performers, but one of the stars at Baldwin was from outside the WPIAL. Angel Piccirillo of Homer Center near Indiana set two meet records. Piccirillo, a Villanova recruit, won the McKinney Mile in 4 minutes, 44.08 seconds, beating North Hills standout Margo Malone, who ran 4:58.08. The McKinney Mile is a special event only at Baldwin, named after the founder of the meet, Chuck McKinney.

Piccirillo also set a meet record in the 800 with a time of 2:09.82.
Piccirillo was the only double winner in individual events on the girls side. Hopewell athlete supreme Shatori Walker-Kimbrough came close to winning two by placing second in the triple jump and first in the long jump. Her long jump of 18 feet, 10 inches ties for fifth-best in WPIAL history in any meet. Walker-Kimbrough’s leap broke the Hopewell school record of 18-6, set in 1977 by Sheree Dorsett. Yes, she’s the sister of NFL legendary running back Tony Dorsett.

The only double winner on the boys side from the WPIAL was Latrobe’s Jeff Elam, who won both hurdles events. He won the 110s in 14.74 and the 300s in 37.99.

However, Matt Bell of Hickory in District 10 won the discus and shot put.

Elsewhere in the meet, youth was served in a couple girls events. West Allegheny freshman Lauren Costa continued to impress this season as she won the 100 in 12.47 seconds. Another freshman, Hempfield’s Maddie Holmberg, won the 100 in 15.12 seconds.
Two Seneca Valley football players went home with first-place medals as running back Forrest Barnes won the 100 and receiver Oliver Philogene the 400.
