2012 MSA SPORTS GIRLS ALL-NETTERS

This might be a first. The MSA Sports All-Netters girls team represents every high school class this season.
The first team has a senior, two juniors, a sophomore and a freshman. That covers all high school classes.

The team is picked by the MSA Sports staff. Here is a look at the player of the year, and the first- and second-team All-Netters

ALL-NETTERS FIRST TEAM:

PLAYER OF THE YEAR
SHATORI WALKER-KIMBROUGH, HOPEWELL
5-11 – Guard-forward – Junior

Walker-Kimbrough has a cousin who is a professional boxer. Walker-Kimbrough’s basketball talent packs a big punch, too.

Walker-Kimbrough had a terrific junior season and delivered knockouts to many Hopewell opponents. She had one of the most memorable playoff runs in WPIAL girls basketball history, and led the Vikings to the WPIAL AAA title. In four playoff games, she scored 126 points (36, 33, 22 and 35 points). Her performance in the championship game against South Park was one for the ages, as she had 35 points, 13 rebounds and 5 blocks in a 50-34 victory. She also made 16 of 16 from the free-throw line.

For the season, Walker-Kimbrough averaged 25.6 points a game. She played everything from point guard to center.

Walker-Kimbrough is one of the best athletes in the state. 

Maryland, Duquesne, Pitt and Xavier have offered her scholarships for basketball. But a few Division I schools also have offered her scholarships for volleyball.

DESTINY BROWN, GATEWAY
5-11 – Guard – Senior

This should tell you all you need to know about Brown: She has signed to play next season at Baylor, the No. 1-ranked college team in the country.

Brown did a little of everything for Gateway this season. She was the fourth-leading scorer in the WPIAL, averaging 24.1 points a game. She also averaged 5.7 assists, 6.2 rebounds and 2.7 steals for a 19-4 team. She shot 44 percent from the field.

CHASSIDY OMOGROSSO, BLACKHAWK
5-7 – Guard – Freshman

Omogrosso made sure youth was served on the MSA All-Netters team. Omogrosso is a ninth-grade point guard who had a huge impact in the Cougars’ run to the WPIAL semifinals and the PIAA quarterfinals.

She finished the season averaging 19 points a game. She was one of a handful of freshmen and sophomores who played for Blackhawk this season. Omogrosso has a very bright future after scoring 556 points this season.

NAJE GIBSON, SETON-LASALLE
5-11 – Forward – Sophomore

Some Division I colleges are already showing interest in Gibson, who averaged 15 points and 9 rebounds this season. She helped Seton-LaSalle become only the third team in WPIAL history to go through an entire season undefeated.

Gibson has been a starter since her freshman year when she averaged 14.5 points a game. Her great grandfather is Josh Gibson, a legendary baseball player for the Homestead Grays of the old Negro League.

ERIN WASKOWIAK, BISHOP CANEVIN
5-10 – Guard – Junior

A starter since her freshman year, Waskowiak has turned into one of the WPIAL’s most versatile players. She can handle the ball like a point guard, but also go inside and post up defenders. This season, she helped Bishop Canevin reach the WPIAL Class AA title game, averaging 20.4 points a game.

Waskowiak is a Division I college prospect and she already has more than 1,400 career points.

ALL-NETTERS SECOND TEAM:

BOBBI BAKER, OAKLAND CATHOLIC
5-7 – Guard – Senior

Bobbi Baker the shot maker was one of the driving forces in Oakland Catholic’s success this season, as the Eagles made it to both the WPIAL and PIAA Class AAAA championship games. A guard with the ability to shoot as well as drive, Baker was Oakland Catholic’s leading scorer at 15 points a game. She had a huge PIAA semifinal, making her first eight shots, including four 3-pointers.

KELLY JOHNSON, MOUNT LEBANON
5-7 – Guard – Senior

Johnson “pointed” the Blue Devils to the WPIAL Class AAAA championship. She was the team’s point guard and averaged 12 points a game. She was excellent at drives to the basket, but also a good defender.

KAYLYNN WATERS, NEW CASTLE
5-9 – Guard – Senior

Waters’ season was cut short by a knee injury sustained in January. But Waters still showed enough talent to be selected to the All-Netters team. She averaged 25.4 points a game, one season after coming off another knee injury.

CIARA GREGORY, JEANNETTE
5-7 – Guard – Junior

Gregory was the leading scorer in the WPIAL this season and finished with a 26.7 average. She scored a WPIAL-high 50 points in the second game of the season against Franklin Regional. Gregory scored her 1,000th point early in the season.

SHELBY LINDSAY, SOUTH PARK
5-11 – Guard – Junior

Lindsay was a do-it-all player in helping the Eagles reach the WPIAL Class AAA championship game. She averaged 16 points a game but also led the team in assists and averaged more than 10 rebounds. She has been a starter since her freshman year.
