Quaker Valley Wins Second Class A Pennsylvania Cup, West Allegheny & Bethel Park Fall Short

It was a good day for the Flyers Cup representatives as Council Rock South and LaSalle College claimed Pennsylvania Cup championships, and Quaker Valley making the short trip home with gold in the Class A game

Here are recaps and scoring summaries of all three championships, heard right here on the MSA Sports Network: 

CLASS AAA PENNSYLVANIA CUP CHAMPIONSHIP: 

LaSalle College Explorers 6  –  Bethel Park Blackhawks  2
LaSalle College has won four of the last five Flyers Cups and won back to back Pennsylvania Cups in 2008-09, the Explorers came into the RMU Island Sports Center and dominated the opening period on the way to a 6-2 victory over the Bethel Park Blackhawks on Sunday night.

It's the fourth Pa. Cup for the Explorers, to go with six Flyers Cup in all, LaSalle College ends the season at 24-2.

The Explorers scored on back to back power plays, Andrew Grejewski with a wrist shot from the top of the near circle, beating Alex Blum for a 1-0 lead, Andrew Romano made it 2-0 on a rebound shot, which may have been deflected.

Another power play, another goal for LaSalle College as Grejewski on another wrister from just inside the blue line, to make it 3-0. Bethel Park took over the better of the play in the second, finally capitalizing as Brodie Taylor found a loose puck in the center slot and lifted it past Andrew King, to cut the lead to 3-1 with just over 8 minutes left in the period.

The Mount Lebanon Ice Arena Play of the Game would come late in the period, Bethel Park with the man advantage, Ronald Greco with the great forecheck and Blum was caught out of his crease, Nicholas Master raised it into the empty net for a 4-1 lead.

Matthew Williams added a power play goal 1:21 into the third, keeping the Explorers perfect at 3-3 on the power play. Jacob Worcester got his own power play goal two and a half minutes, Worcester also had a penalty shot midway thru the period, but attempted a cross-over move and King sweep-checked the puck away. Brett Supinski added a late goal for the final margin.

Bethel Park saw it's 15 game winning streak come to an end, the Blackhawks finish the season 18-8-1, suffering their first loss of 2012.

CLASS AA PENNSYLVANIA CUP CHAMPIONSHIP:

COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH GOLDEN HAWKS 4  –  WEST ALLEGHENY INDIANS 3
Sophomore Matt Grebosky scored in overtime to send the West Allegheny Indians to their first Penguin Cup title and a berth in the Pennsylvania Cup championship game. The bad news, it was the next day for the Indians, as tired legs took over, West Allegheny was shorthanded ten times in the game, including six consecutive penalties in an eight minute stretch as the Council Rock South Golden Hawks claimed the cup with a 4-3 victory over the Indians.

Making their fourth straight appearance, Council Rock South fell to Bishop Canevin the last two years and Latrobe in 2009 three seasons, but were four of ten on the man advantage. Paul Cloud scored on a blast just inside the far post fifteen seconds into the third period to tie the game at three, on the first of two 5 on 3 power plays Daniel Ufberg beat Jason Kumpfmiller with 8:11 remaining to take the lead for good.

West Allegheny took a 1-0 lead in the first period on a Jonathan Levitt breakaway 3:21 in. That held up until very early in the second Stephen Junod took advantage of a turnover and Kumpfmiller being too far out of the crease to knot the game at one, 15 seconds into the second.

The Indians answered quickly as Kyle Walter went off for interference, Grebosky pounded home a rebound, set up by Patrick Coburn to lead 2-1. All of the goals the rest of the way were special teams, Nick Keck tied the game at two on a rebound power play goal. West A got a second power play goal as Coburn scored midway thru the period to take the lead. The Indians had a late power play and had three great opportunities, but could not score.

West A pulled the goalie in the final 90 seconds, Coburn and Levitt both had great chances, Coburn blasted a shot wide of the far post with 15 seconds left. The Golden Hawks had a chance to seal the win, Junod hit the far post on a empty net attempt.

Council Rock South finishes 21-4-2 overall, West Allegheny closes the season at 21-4.

CLASS A PENNSYLVANIA CUP CHAMPIONSHIP:

QUAKER VALLEY QUAKERS 4 –  WEST CHESTER RUSTIN KNIGHTS 1

The Quaker Valley Quakers pick up their second Pennsylvania Cup with the win in the Class A championship game in front of a standing room only crowd. QV picked up their second trophy and gold medals in just over 24 hours, coming off a 4-2 win over three time Penguins Cup champion Mars Saturday afternoon

West Chester Rustin led 1-0 on a goal thirty seconds into the game by Jeff Nelson on a turnover, but Kevin Kenny tied the game at one with a wrist shot at the top of the near circle.

The Knights had troubles on the power play all day, being called for icing on consecutive power plays, Rustin was 0 for 4 on the afternoon. Clayton Bouchard made it a 2-1 game, he trailed Ryan Dixon into the zone and beat Zach Sheriko on the rebound.

Quaker Valley had a chance to put the game away early in the third with Tyler King off for tripping, but the Knights killed the opportunity. A scary moment occurred midway thru the third period when Jimmy Perkins ran into goalie Sheriko, who was face down on the ice for over a minute, he would remain in the game.

Kenny went off for tripping with 6:23 remaining, but the Quakers killed the penalty and actually had the better play during the two minutes, that was the Mount Lebanon Ice Arena Play of the Game. Ryan Lottes sealed the win with a blast from the center point that Sheriko never saw with 2:11 remaining, the goal set up off a faceoff win by Bouchard.

Tempers flared in the final minute, the Quakers got a power play goal by Otto Schaefer with 18 seconds left for additional insurance.

Doug Revak stopped 16 of 17 shots for the Quakers, Bouchard had a goal and assist. The Quakers finish at 21-1-1 and end on a 21 game unbeaten strak
