It’s championship time, so that means it’s MSA Sports blog time! Sure, we are the only place to listen to all three PIHL Penguins Cup Championship Games live (and archived), but if you don’t have the time and want a quick update on the happenings of the high school hockey finals all day long from the CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh.
CLASS A: #1 QUAKER VALLEY QUAKERS vs. #2 MARS PLANETS
The Champions:
FINAL SCORE: Quaker Valley 4, Mars 2.
GOAL! Mars is making it interesting, cutting it to 4-2 Quaker Valley on a Power Play goal by Robert Foley. One minute to go here in this one.
GOAL! Mars will not be shut out in this one. Robert Foley scores with 4:21 remaining to make it now 4-1 Quaker Valley.
Showing the great relationship between the Penguins and Western PA youth hockey, all of the jerseys of youth teams in are on display in a concourse at CONSOL Energy Center:
GOAL! That might be it. Jimmy Perkins takes a great pass from Jayson Lottes, putting it home and making it 4-0 Quaker Valley on 0:32 into the 3rd Period.
Mars needs a big time 3rd Period here if they want to win their 4th-straight Class A Championship.
AFTER 2: Quaker Valley 3, Mars 0
GOAL! This one hurts. With 2.7 seconds left in the period, Ryan Dickson does it again, making it 3-0 Quaker Valley. Ryan Lottes on the assist.
GOAL! Ryan Dickson makes it 2-0 Quaker Valley. A spectacular individual move by Dickson to split two defenders and a great floating shot over the pads of Christian Knapp.
Mars is struggling to find offensive production and have been out-shot 8-1 here in the 2nd period. QV has done excellent work containing the skilled forwards from Mars.
Good news for QV as Kenny is back on the ice and doesn’t even miss a shift.
A tripping call on Bryan Thomas of Mars gives us some 4 on 3 hockey.
Kevin Kenny shaken up after a hit. Comes off the ice with an apparent knee injury. He’s QV’s 2nd leading scorer.
Now Ryan Lottes goes to the box for QV on an interference call. We’ll be playing some 4 on 4 hockey.
Another penalty on Mars, this time on Robert Foley for interference.
GOAL! Clayton Bouchard puts home a rebound for QV, making it 1-0 Quakers at the 6:08 mark.
Max Master goes back to the box on a kneeing call. This is the third penalty on Master today.
Remember, you can listen to the broadcast here: http://www.msasports.net/node/24812. Steve Nagler and Mike Azadian on the call.
Max Master is in the box again though for Mars. Another chance for QV to break this scoreless tie.
AFTER 1: Quaker Valley 0, Mars 0
Christian Knapp makes a big save for Mars as Otto Schaefer almost puts one home. Score still 0-0.
A very defensive start to this one, as we’re still scoreless with 2 minutes to go in the first period.
Both teams lined up for the National Anthem:
Another tripping call, this time on QV though, as Jayson Lottes goes to the box.
QV will get the first man advantage, as Max Master goes to the box for tripping. QV is a ridiculous 7/12 on the PP this postseason.
These two teams have combined to win 5 of the last 6 Class A Championships. Mars is looking for their 4th in a row.
?We’re underway here at CONSOL Energy Center, Quaker Valley and Mars for the Class A title.
