WPIAL Football Plays of the Week – 10/04/2011

Oh, we’re halfway there.  Oh, oh, few teams had a prayer.  That was the theme of Week Five of the football season.  While the majority of games this particular week were decided by large margins of victory (see the Gateway Gators and the Clairton Bears), there were a select few that were not.  Those games were the sweetest yet.  While Quad-A provided the most heart-stopping, highlight reel action, it’s the lower classifications this week that shine. 

Play of the Week #1 – “Coaching Royalty Clash”

The site was historic Dormont Stadium.  The two coaches locking horns are WPIAL legends. The two teams meeting on a cool Saturday evening are experiencing their typical success so far in 2011.  The stage set for an epic showdown, and the showdown was indeed epic.  Springdale and Bishop Canevin.  A see-saw game that went back and forth, it was the Crusaders who scored the late touchdown to tie the game before overtime was needed to determine a winner.  Bobby Gustine scored the tying touchdown, reeling in a 24 yard reception.  Gustine would also run in from six yards out in overtime to send the homestanding Crusaders home with the pivotal 26-20 win in Single-A, Eastern Conference win.  
Play of the Week #2 – “The Real King of the ‘Hill'”

Trinity Hillers @ West Mifflin Titans

The West Mifflin Titans had justifiably raised plenty of eyebrows in the AAA Big Eight Conference.  Some had even predicted that it could be the Titans who may have a shot to dethrone the long-time reigning champion Jaguars of Thomas Jefferson.  The Trinity Hillers name may have been lightly sprinkled in to the conversation from time-to-time, but perhaps not as frequently as the Titans.  The Hillers took exception on Friday night and made sure Trinity would be right in the mix for a Big Eight Conference title hunt.  After the Titans had rallied to tie the game at 13-13 in the third quarter, Brandon Robertson scored on a one yard touchdown run and the Hillers’ D forced a fourth quarter sack to provide the decisive points to give Trinity the win.
Play of the Week #3  – “Sour Cherries”

Brentwood Spartans @ Fort Cherry Rangers

Another dandy in Single-A.  The Rangers, led by a Garry had quickly been emerging as the class of the conference, but the Spartans have had a year of emergence as well.  Fort Cherry trailed late and scored a pair of unanswered touchdowns to knot the score, Brentwood prevailed on the road in a big way.  Spencer Hubsch proved to be the hero scoring his second touchdown of the night.  He reeled in a 11-yard pass from Chris Shortley in circus-like fashion to send the Spartans to a huge Black Hills conference win.
Play of the Week #4 – “Serafino’s Vision”

OLSH @ Leechburg

Somewhere Coach Foge is smiling.  A football program he helped create was able to score it’s second straight victory – and do so in convincing fashion.  HUZZAH to OLSH!  Out Lady of the Sacred Heart erupted for 38 points – including 24 which came in the first half – to score an Eastern Conference win against Leechburg.   It is the first time in the program’s history that OLSH has recorded back-to-back wins.
