Hometown Volleyball Match Recap – Avonworth Antelopes – 09/29/2014

In Hometown Volleyball action at Avonworth High School, the home standing Antelopes lost to the Butler Golden Tornados in a non section game by a 3-0 match score. Avonworth with only four seniors, and 3 juniors is a very young team and it showed on the court Monday night.
Avonworth led 1-0 in game one and the match was close thru ten points at 5-5. But the Tornado’s took over from there jumping out to a 16-8 lead. The Antelopes would come back and cut the lead to 19-14 with inspired play, but Butler was too strong and finished off the game scoring six of the last 10 points to win 25-18.
In game two Butler led early and never lost the lead. They jumped out to a 8-2 lead on great service and front court defense. The Antelopes never gave up and cut the lead to 12-10. But each time the lady lopes played well, Butler would surge ahead. Late in the game Avonworth cut the lead to two again to 22-20. But Butler was too strong and scored three of the last 4 points to win 25-21.
Game three was another gutty performance by Avonworth. They trailed 10-1 and seemingly were out of it. But they never gave in and kept working, and slowly cut the lead. At 22-19 Avonworth was poised for the comeback but Butler scored 3 of the final 5 points to win 25-21.
Avonworth has talent in every class, Senior Caitlyn Miller the Libero is a defensive presence,, Junior Abby Oberdick is strong at the net on defense, and is becoming a terror on offense. Sophomore Olivia Alexander has stepped in at middle hitter and has provided another tall body at the net.
Head coach Doug Vandervort is frustrated by the teams record, but happy work the work ethic. “Were almost there, we need to get better at the mental aspect of the game, we work hard in practice and at times its carrying over into the game, but we need to get better”
Sophomore Whitney Brown in an interview after the game said “we are a family, we work hard and never give up, I like working together to try to build up this team for the future”.
Right now the Antelopes are in 4th place at 4-3 one game behind both South Side and Eden Christian in section 4 single A. With five games left in the section they are hoping to gel in the late season and make a push for the playoffs.
