In a pivotal early season matchup between two teams struggling to find consistency, the Vincentian Academy Royals staged a huge rally in defeating the Brentwood Spartans on their home court by a score of 3-2.
While Vincentian Academy started strong in the first two games of the match by grabbing early leads, the Spartans would eventually battle back and win both by scores of 25-23 and 25-22. Brentwood was paced early on by the attacking of their outside hitters, Kaitlyn McNamara, Hannah Livingston and Alexis Wagner and by getting some excellent blocks for key points by middle Allison Mrkonja. Mrkonja would finish with a total of five blocks in the match.
The Royals would not be swayed by losing the first two games of the match as they stormed out to a 9-1 lead in game three, getting many kills from Julie Galbreath (13 total kills in the match) and Marina Eyster (11 kills). The Royals would eventually take game three by the score of 25-23. Once on the scoreboard, the Royals would continue to roll as they were the much more rhythmic of the two teams the rest of the way. The Royals would cruise on to victory in game four, 25-17, forcing a pivotal fifth game.
Brentwood came out with some extra energy to start game five and got an ace from Jenel Foust to take a short-lived 1-0 lead. However, the Royals would rip off six unanswered points, effectively taking the breath away from the Spartans. The Royals would end up winning the final game of the match by the score of 15-9, earning their first section win of the year and their second win overall.
Brentwood’s McNamara would finish with a team-high total of 11 kills. Setter Taryn Sherry was a star for the Spartans as well as she registered 7 kills of her own, deftly placing quick balls into open areas of the opposing court. Sherry was consistently providing her hitters with great balls as well. Livingston (6 kills) and Wagner (5 kills) were terrific off of the bench for Brentwood in the loss. Brentwood falls to 1-4 in the very difficult Class A, Section 2 and will now go on the road to face Serra Catholic next Tuesday.
