MSA SPORTS CUP: South Fayette Roars to First Class AAA Cup Title

The first ten years of the MSA Sports Cup has shown us that while there are a couple of dominating schools in the other three classifications, the chase for the Class AAA Cup has been up for grabs with eight different schools earning The Cup in ten years. Now in the eleventh year of this competition, we have another first time winner in Triple-A making it nine different champs in eleven years.

After finishing as the runner-up in 2012-2013 and being a steady member on the Top 5 in recent years, South Fayette is finally enjoying its day in the Championship Sun with a convincing victory.

South Fayette scored 565 points, beating out two-time defending champion Mars by 120 points, a year after the Lions were beaten by the Fighting Planets by 105-point cushion. West Allegheny finished third followed by the school the Indians beat in the WPIAL baseball finals, Blackhawk. Thomas Jefferson was fifth. Rounding out the Class AAA top ten were Central Valley, Franklin Regional, Indiana and South Park. Laurel Highlands, Moon and Uniontown all finished tied for tenth place.

South Fayette High School won WPIAL championships in Boys Cross-Country in the fall and Girls Track & Field in the spring, plus scored 130 points thanks to the WPIAL and PIAA state championship run by the Lions football team in the fall. Three district crowns isn’t dominating for a Triple-A school, however South Fayette was steady all year long, scoring points in 16 of the 20 sports in the Sports Cup chase.

The Lions success in 2013-2014 allows South Fayette to join Peters Township, Moon (2), Pine-Richland, South Park, Thomas Jefferson, West Allegheny, Hampton and Mars (2) as Class AAA MSA Sports Cup winners, making this classification the most balanced and unpredictable of the annual four classification chases.
