Another school year and another MSA Sports Cup in Class AAAA for North Allegheny High School. NA captured their 11th Cup in eleven years since the MSA Sports Network started this school year long competition to determine the top sports programs in each classification. There are 20 sports in which schools can earn points in the competition and for the second straight year and only the second time in this history of the coveted competition, the Tigers earned points in ALL of them.
In the 2012-2013 school year, North Allegheny scored a mind-numbing and record 1,115 points. In 2013-2014, they had to settle for a mere 965 points. The second place school finished 530 points behind NA.
Over the last couple of years, the only battle in Quad-A has been for second place, as was the case again this year. Fierce South Hills rivals Upper St. Clair and Mount Lebanon battled for second place with the Panthers edging the Blue Devils 435-425. Runner-up a year ago, Peters Township finished fourth with 345 points while the combo of Pittsburgh Central Catholic and Oakland Catholic were fifth with 325 points. The rest of the top ten was Seneca Valley, Hempfield and Bethel Park with both Fox Chapel and Norwin tying for 9th place.
A year ago, North Allegheny won eight district championships and three state crowns. This past year, the black and gold powerhouse had to ‘settle’ for seven WPIAL team championships, one PIAA team title and four state runner-up trophies.
In the fall, the Tigers captured WPIAL gold in boys cross country, girls volleyball and girls tennis as well as a PIAA state championship in girls tennis. Then in the winter season, more gold came in both WPIAL boys and girls swimming as both teams later finished as runner-up in the PIAA state stage. The near record-breaking season for the Tigers concluded in the spring with a WPIAL championship and PIAA runner-up in boys volleyball as well as a District 7 crown in boys track & field.
After a health scare late in the school year, we are happy to see North Allegheny High School athletic director Bob Bozzuto is back on the job and already looking ahead to 2014-2015 and a run at a dozen MSA Sports Cup titles for the Tigers.
Congratulations to the 2013-2014 WPIAL Class AAAA MSA Sports Cup Champions – The North Allegheny Tigers.
