Coming into the season the WPIAL had a pair of returning state champions in AA, George Phillippi of Derry and Jason Nolf of Kittanning. One of those wrestlers is one win away from repeating. The other did not have the same type of luck.
Jason Nolf finds himself in the finals at 145, as he cruised to the championship with a 16-4 major decision win over Zach Vroman of Brookville in the quarterfinals and a fall in 3:15 over Dakota Nixon of Muncy in the semi-finals. George Phillippi meanwhile was not able to get past the quarterfinals at 120, as he dropped a 3-1 decision to Joey Gould of Bethlehema Catholic. Gould used three back points in the second period to beat Phillippi in the match. Phillippi did collect himself to win three matches on Friday in the consolations to get to the 3rd place match, where he will get a rematch with Gould.
Other then Nolf the WPIAL will feature three other wrestlers in the finals on Saturday. Steve Edwards of Burrell is in the finals at 152 thanks to a 10-6 win over Brad Malinowski of Fort LeBoeuf in the quarterfinals and a 5-1 win over Cole Walter of Mifflinburg in the semi-finals.
At 160, Jared Walker of South Fayette took a 7-0 win over Adam Soldridge of Bethlehem Catholic in the quarterfinals. Then in the semi-finals, Walker went to the ultimate tiebreaker with Ryan Priesch of Milton and he did not have choice. Priesch chose bottom and Walker rode Priesch the entire period before getting him on his back as time expired to win the bout 4-2.
Avella’s Jake Temple had a pair of tight matches to get to the finals. He defeated Dylan Otis of Wyalusing 3-2 in the quarterfinals thanks to a takedown in the second period. In the semi-finals, Temple traded escapes in regulation as well as in double overtime with Adam Dunn of Bethlehem Catholic to go into the ultimate tiebreaker tied at two. But it was Temple who had choice and decided to go on the bottom. Temple was able to get free and picked up a reversal over Dunn to win the match 4-2.
Overall the WPIAL will bring home 17 of a possible 35 medals from Hershey in AA.

After a stellar first day for AAA that seen 31 of the 42 wrestlers advance into the quarterfinals, the WPIAL remained hot in Hershey. The WPIAL has a semi-finalist in every single weight class except for one (220) with 19 wrestlers staying alive in the winners bracket.
To no ones surprise, all three WPIAL wrestlers advanced into the semi-finals at 126, with Sam Krivus of Hempfield, Dalton Macri of Canon McMillan, and AC Headlee of Waynesburg all winning handily. One surprise was at 132, where Franklin Regional defending state champion Tyler Smith lost 3-0 to Nazareth’s Chase Zemenak. Smith had beaten Zemenak earlier this season in the PIAA team championships 1-0. While Smith dropped a decision at 132, Cameron Coy of Penn Trafford won comfortably 3-0 over Tommy Stokes of Bensalem and Ty Buckiso of Peters Township won by a narrow 1-0 score over Zach Elvin of Central Dauphin.
At 160, Jonathan Avon held on late to win 3-2 over Matthew Carr of Abington Heights. At 170, Kyle Coniker of Central Catholic scored a takedown in the third period to defeat Rashon Lusane of Norristown 4-2. Also at 170, Noah Wilps notched a late takedown to win 5-2 over John Jakobsen of Stroudsburg. Norwin’s Andrew Phipps also had to score a late takedown in the third period at 195 to defeat Jordan Wertz of Boyertown 3-1. At 285, Shane Kuhn of Kiski Area had to ride out the entire second period and score an escape in the third period to win 1-0 over Tracy Green of Methacton.
The WPIAL kept 10 wrestlers alive in the consolations, which guaranteed the AAA WPIAL wrestlers 29 of a possible 42 medals coming home from Hershey this weekend.
