WPIAL Saturday’s Scholastic Starz for Week Seven

One of the brightest stars in the WPIAL, a team that is close to making the WPIAL for the first time EVER and two teams who are not playing for the Playoffs, they are more focused on another 'P' word…Pride. That is a taste of what was on display in the three WPIAL football games played on the seventh Saturday of the season. And the stand outs were…

Lenny Williams – Sto-Rox

There is a NEW king atop the WPIAL career passing leaders, and is name is Lenny. Sto-Rox quarterback Lenny Williams broke the all-time career passing record of Christian Brumbaugh of South Fayette Saturday afternoon. In this pass happy scholastic football world, nobody knows how long the senior will hold the record, but he has two regular season games and an expected lengthy postseason run to build on it. Williams hit on 12 of 15 passes for 302 yards and three touchdown tosses, all to Mallory Claybourne, plus he scored on a 14-yard run in a closer than expected 42-30 victory over the host Western Beaver Golden Beavers in a Class A Big 7 Conference tilt.

Nathaniel Cofer – Summit Academy

most of the time on Friday Night HighLights and Saturdays Scholastic Straz, we focus on the great offensive performances. But as Summit Academy took a huge step toward clinching their first ever WPIAL football playoff berth, we get a little defensive. Nathaniel Cofer recovered two Valley fumbles, the third consecutive week that he has picked up a loose ball, plus he blocked a punt in the fourth quarter that led to the Knights' final score in a 26-6 Class AA Allegheny Conference upset of the visiting Vikings. Cofer has found the end zone twice this season on defense, returning loose footballs for scores against Kittanning and Ford City.

Angelo Rios-Lopez, Ty Mitchell and Ethan Tush – Bentworth

It was a tri-fecta for the three offensive stars for Bentworth Saturday, as they finally got a chance to shine in what has been a dark and gloomy season. Angelo Rios-Lopez completed his only pass, ran twice for 21 yards, returned an interception for a 40-yard score and hit on all 6 extra points while Ty Mitchell returned the opening kickoff 85 yards for a score and later sliced into the end zone on a 42-yard run for Bentworth. Not to be undone, Ethan Tush rushed for 80 yards on 6 carries and scored on runs of 17 and 35 yards as the Bearcats won for the first time this season with a 43-6 drubbing of the host Geibel Gators in a Class A Tri-County South Conference contest.
