Shaler Squeeks Past Chartiers Valley for First WPIAL D-II Girls Lacrosse Crown

It may have taken longer than expected for Shaler to capture the WPIAL Girls Division II Lacrosse Championship, but the wait was well worth it for the Titans. The championship match was twice delayed by lightning and Shaler let leads of 7-1 and 12-6 slip away before rallying to defeat the Colts at Martorelli Stadium in the North Hills.

Trailing 1-0, Shaler scored 7 unanswered goals to take the lead at 10:58 of the first half. During the seven goal run, the first lighting delay came after Chartiers Valley called a timeout trailing 5-1. The delay lasted about 55 minutes.

After Chartiers Valley’s Maria Stamerra scored her third goal of the half at (20:17) Shaler got goals from sophomore midfielder Shannon Lynch – her 4^th – and Courtney Ambrozic – her 3^rd – to build a 12-5 lead.

Chartiers Valley would score the games next nine goals, three in the final: 30 of the first half, to take a 14-12 lead with (12:41) remaining.

But lightning struck again, and the Titans regrouped for a comeback.

After a delay of a half-an-hour, Lynch scored her 6^th goal of the game to bring the Titans back to within one. Senior Kristel Chatellier the scored the game’s final two goals to complete her hat trick, tying the game at (16:11) and netting the game winning goal at the (16:45) mark, her fourth of the game.

The comeback spoiled a tremendous effort by Stamerra, a freshman attack for Chartiers Valley, who dominated much of the game and finished with 8 goals. Lynch (6 goals), Chatellier (4 Goals), Ambrozic (3 Goals) and Nellie Phillips (2 Goals) each had multiple goal games for the Titans.

Senior Alivia Cangelier and junior Hope Tornabene each scored twice in the losing effort for Chartiers Valley. The Colts finish their season at (17-3) and 2^nd seeded Chartiers Valley finishes as the bridesmaid once again, losing in the WPIAL Division II championship game for the third straight year.

Top seeded Shaler improved to (18-1) and after three straight semifinal losses, the Titans captured the gold medal for the first time in school history.
