At Allison Elemnetary School in Hometown Softball action, the defending WPIAL single A champion Chartiers Houston Bucs defeat the McGuffey Highlanders by a score of 3-0. At the start of the day the Highlanders were up a ½ game over the Bucs with a 3-0 section record. Chartiers Houston with a 2-0 section record was hoping a home game would give them the opportunity to take sole possession of first place when the day was done. Both teams proved in the early going of the season that they could score runs as the Bucs averaged 7.4 runs in their first five games, and McGuffey was at 12 runs per game .However  this game would turn out to be a defensive battle.

Bucs star pitcher Kayla Briggs was dominant early on striking out seven batters in the first three innings and giving up only one hit as she set down 13 of the first 14 batters she saw. She also got the offense started with a double in the first inning and scoring on a triple by second baseman Haley Sutton to give the Bucs the early lead at 1-0. After the Bucs first inning run McGuffey pitcher Cassie Weiss set down 11 of the next 12 batters to keep her team in the game.

At 1-0 Chartiers Houston in the top of the fifth innings the Highlanders got two base runners on with one out. An error and a single and McGuffey had a runner in scoring position. However a failed bunt pop up, and a strikeout got Briggs out of the inning, as the Highlanders failed to score. The Bucs would then tack on two runs in the bottom of the 5th inning. A lead off double by Samantha Elliot a sacrifice bunt  by Sabrina Jenkins, had a Buc runner at 3rd base. Jessica Blumen hit a grounder to 3rd base and Elliot was thrown out at home on a close play. Now with a runner at 1st base Briggs tripled scoring Blumen then Piper McLaughlin singled to score Briggs and it was 3-0 Chartiers Houston.

McGuffey again in the 6th inning put runners at 1st and second with one out and their number 3 hitter due up. Sami Weiss tried to bunt and popped up midway between the plate and the mound, Briggs ran in, dove and made the catch for the out. She then slid to her knees and threw out the runner at first for the double play. Two straight innings and two straight times the Highlanders had runners on base and could not score. The Bucs defense was solid all game long and turned out to be the difference in the game.

For Chartiers Houston Kayla Briggs went the distance on the mound pitching 6 innings, giving up no runs on 3 hits, 8 strikeouts, 1 walk, and left 4 on base. At the plate she was 2 for 3 with a double, triple 2 runs scored and an RBI. Also getting RBI'S were McLaughlin, and Sutton.

The Bucs improve to 6-0 on the year and 3-0 in section 2 AA. McGuffey falls to 3-1 overall ,and in the section. The next Hometown Broadcast for the Chartiers Houston Bucs will be on Saturday April 13th at home versus the Waynesburg Raiders at 1:00 PM on the MSA SPORTS NETWORK
