An early offensive onslaught lifted Charters-Houston (3-3, 1-1) to a 16-0 mercy rule victory over Avella (0-2, 0-1) on Tuesday afternoon in Houston.

The Buccaneers plated 12 first inning runs and added four more in the second inning in a victory that took just 53 minutes and was called after the top of the second inning.

Kaitlyn Dittrich picked up the win for Charters-Houston, allowing just one hit and striking out seven batters, including the final six she faced.

Avella’s disastrous first inning was impacted by three errors, eight wild pitches and four walks. Those blunders, combined with Charters-Houston’s aggressiveness on the base paths, allowed the Bucs’ first eight batters to not only reach base, but score as well. The highlight of the first inning was a single by Kasey Scears that plated two runs, extending the advantage to 6-0.

Brittany Blumen pushed Charters-Houston’s lead to 14-0 with a two-run scoring single in the second innings. Kayla Alderson would also drive in a pair of runs for the Bucs.

Chartiers-Houston will next meet Fort Cherry on Thursday before Friday’s big showdown against Jefferson-Morgan, a rematch of the 2015 WPIAL Class A Softball Championship.

Emily Pollock picked up the Eagles’ lone hit and pitched an inning of relief, allowing three runs on three hits. Sammy Dunkle was tagged with the loss, allowing 13 runs and walking four in an inning of work. The Eagles will host top-ranked West Greene on Thursday.
