Through the first period of play in the Class AA Pennsylvania Cup Championship, the Bishop Canevin Crusaders battled back and forth with Central Bucks South. The second period, however, was complete dominance by the Titans, who scored five unanswered goals to prevail 7-3 at the Pegula Ice Arena at Penn State University to win their second state title in the past three years.

Matt Stoll propelled CB South, as he netted four goals, including three in the decisive middle frame. Additionally, the Titans outshot Bishop Canevin 43-17 in a rematch of the 2014 Pennsylvania Cup Championship.

Although the result was the same as the previous meeting, the early stages of the contest were in stark contrast. Unlike the prior encounter, the Crusaders and Titans played even through the first six minutes, until Daniel Tkac staked Bishop Canevin to the lead on a sharp angle shot that snuck inside the far post past CB South netminder Kevin Dorozinsky.

Just 29 seconds later, though, Stoll pounced on a rebound and shuffled it on the backhand past BC’s Neko Borghini.

The score remained deadlocked until the Crusaders tallied on the power play with just less than four minutes left in the opening period. After he gained position in front of the net, Lukas Krukovski steered in a pass from Thomas Krivak to put BC ahead again.

The ice fully tilted in favor of the Titans in the second, though, beginning with a crucial series early in the period. Alec Bosnic skated in on a breakaway for Bishop Canevin, but Dorozinsky made a strong pad save on the backhand effort. Moments later, Stoll skated into the Crusaders’ territory one-on-one against a defenseman. Stoll lost the puck during his stickhandling attempt, but the puck went on net, forcing Borghini to make the stop. The rebound came back to Stoll, though, who deposited it into the net.

Just seconds later, the Titans took their first lead, as Damon DeLaurentis finished a beautiful centering pass from Jason Betchel. Betchel struck later in the frame, as he corralled a rebound that fell at this skates just outside the crease, and slammed it past Borghini.

The Titans took complete command over the final three minutes of the frame, as Stoll struck twice more. First, he tallied on a beautiful redirection of a shot by Connor Matsinger from the point. Just more than one minute later, Stoll took a sharp angle shot that just barely trickled past Borghini and across the goal line.

With the outcome all but decided entering the third period, the sides exchanged goals, as Bishop Canevin’s Jacob Kuzma scored on a blast from the point on the power play, while CB South’s Ryan Boylan capped the scoring with approximately six minutes remaining.

While the Crusaders came up short in their pursuit of a fifth Pennsylvania Cup title, they conclude their season with a mark of 18-7-1. In the process, they claimed their eighth Penguins Cup, defeating Greater Latrobe, Baldwin and Mars en route to the gold.
