Two of the three boys’ individual cross country winners were repeat champions, as Beaver Falls’ Domenic Peretta and Quaker Valley’s Zach Skolnekovich defended their championships, while Nick Wolk of Peters Township earned his first title. Meanwhile, all three reigning team champions successfully defended their titles in the event, which was held at Coopers Lake Campground near Slippery Rock.
In Class A, Peretta, who is also a standout in track and field for Beaver Falls, notched a winning time of 16:15, 13 seconds better than Sewickley Academy’s Griffin Mackey. A senior, Peretta will be competing for the Penn State track and field team next year.
In the team competition, Sewickley Academy took first, edging Winchester Thurston. Riverview earned the third and final state qualifying spot, as the Raiders advanced via a tiebreaker over Shenango. The top 15 individual times from competitors not on a qualifying team also earned spots in the PIAA Championship.
In Class AA, Skolnekovich captured a convincing triumph, besting his closest competitor by more than 40 seconds. A junior, Skolnekovich actually recorded a slower time than his performance last year, but harsh winds partially contributed to that.
Meanwhile, the Knoch Knights took first in the team category, holding a sizeable margin over South Fayette, Greensburg Salem and Mars, the other three qualifying teams. In this classification, 20 runners aside from those on the qualifying teams advanced to the state finals.
With the 2014 Class AAA Champion Matt McGoey graduated, Nick Wolk became the only first-time boys’ winner. Wolk, a senior, notched a narrow victory, as North Allegheny’s Marc Migliozzi finished just three seconds behind.
In the team scoring, North Allegheny turned in a dominant performance. The Tigers’ top five runners all finished in the top 13, while their other two participants finished in the top 22, as well. Seneca Valley and Mount Lebanon also earned bids in the PIAA event.
