Freeport Coach Tom Phillips was able to rally his Yellowjackets Monday night to a 3-0 non section victory over the visiting Derry Trojans.
It was a combination of service errors by the Trojans and the Yellowjackets taking advantage of them in the first game. The first game started out with Freeport in a lead and they didn’t give that lead up all game. They were able to stretch their lead to as big as 9 at 24-15 when they took the next point to win game one 25-15. That game was won with big time net presence by senior Morgan Ruppersburger with 4 of her match high 14 kills coming in that game alone. Ruppersburger is half of the Freeport’s net front presence with the other half being fellow senior Zoe Pawlak, a Loyala recruit, who was limited in her action due to tendonitis in her knees. She saw time but did not play front line and mainly was a passer and server for the Yellowjackets.
Game two didn’t start out as well for the Yellowjackets. Head coach Rock Smith for Derry was able to get his team to mount a sizable lead on the home-standing Jackets as large, as 6 points, at a score of 7-1. At that point, Freeport began to chip away but wasn’t able to gain control until taking their first lead at 23-22. After a few back and forth points, Freeport won game two by a score of 25-23.
Game three started out positive for the Yellowjackets and it seemed like everything was going their way. In particular when senior Meredith Tirdel got a ‘bump kill’ to give Freeport a 2-1 lead that was won off a huge volley between teams. Freeport ended up winning that game 25-16 to win the match with a 3-0 victory. Head coach Tom Phillips for the Jackets attributed some of his teams struggles to a case of the Monday’s. Saying that “Monday’s are not good days for games or practices for his team it seems” and he said he will have them ready for their upcoming week.
Freeport plays host to Valley Tuesday and goes to rival Knoch on Thursday. Both Mondays contest and the Valley match are a Pink Out giving all proceeds to a local breast cancer charity. For Derry, leading the way on the stat sheet were Alix Ellis and Danielle Zemba a sophomore and junior respectively, both with 6 kills.
