WPIAL singles champ, 2 doubles teams move into state tennis semifinals

The WPIAL Class 2A singles champion and two pairs of district doubles champs are two wins away from a state title.

Gabriella Dusi of Belle Vernon and the teams of Jackie Tang and Michelle Yang of Mt. Lebanon and Kirsten Close and Avery Allan of Quaker Valley won two matches each at the PIAA championships Friday in Hershey to move on to Saturday’s semifinals.

Dusi of Belle Vernon blanked Serafima Billis of Lancaster Catholic, 6-0, 6-0 in the first round and defeated District 12 champ Emerson Salgrath of Lansdale Catholic, 6-3, 6-3, in the quarterfinals.

Close and Allan of Quaker Valley rolled through their first two matches, beating Kaydence Bohning and Madelyn Maley of Kutztown, 6-0, 6-0, and District 4 champs Rena Liu and Sophia Plastaras of Hughesville, 6-1, 6-0.

Tang and Yang shut out Jin Lin Chen and Brooke Mengel of Wilson, 6-0, 6-0, and took care of District 1 runners-up Kim Chen and Ava Bograd of Council Rock South, 6-4, 6-2.

In Class 2A, the quarterfinals are set for 8 a.m. with the finals to follow at 1 p.m. In Class 3A, the semifinals are at 10:30 a.m. with the finals at 3:30 p.m.
