Six WPIAL coaches earned statewide recognition Wednesday when the PIAA announced its coaches of the year for the 2023-24 school year.

The list included two Peters Township golf coaches — David Kuhn (boys) and Michael Lacey (girls) — along with North Allegheny’s Russ Hoburg (girls volleyball), Shaler’s Paul Stadelman (boys volleyball), South Fayette’s Shawn Leydig (boys lacrosse) and Indiana’s Sarah Brown (boys swimming and diving).

The Peters Township golf teams swept the PIAA 3A team championships last season as first-time winners.

The North Allegheny girls won their seventh consecutive PIAA volleyball title while the Shaler boys won their first. The Indiana boys swimming team was also a first-time state champion last season.

The South Fayette boys lacrosse team finished as the WPIAL runner-up and reached the state semifinals.

The coaches were nominated by their schools, coaches’ association or members of the PIAA board and administrative staff. Winners were selected based on the impact made to their specific sports program, team success, adherence to PIAA bylaws and sportsmanship.

In all, the PIAA honored 25 coaches.
