Welcome to a new week of high school sports and the start of the second half of section play in WPIAL girls soccer.
At the midway point in Class 3A, Fox Chapel (7-0-1), Moon (6-1), South Fayette (7-3) and Plum (7-1) are the section leaders, all with one-game leads.
The toughest test Monday for one of the leaders comes in Section 4-3A when Plum hosts Franklin Regional (6-4).
The Mustangs are a perfect 6-0 atop the section while the Panthers are 5-1 and have won four straight matches.
As far as the other leaders, Fox Chapel visits Shaler (4-4-1) in Section 1 and Moon is home to Chartiers Valley (0-6) in Section 2.
Section 3 leader South Fayette has a tough nonsection test against 4A Upper St. Clair (6-1-2).
First drives for gold
If the weather cooperates, the top female golfers in the district will converge on Willowbrook Country Club in Apollo for the first round of the 2024 WPIAL Class 3A and 2A girls individual golf championships.
The fields will consist of 29 golfers in 3A and 17 golfers in 2A.
In the 3A finals, there will be seven groups of three golfers each and two groups of four golfers teeing off at 8 a.m.
In 2A, there are five groups of three golfers each and one group of two golfers starting at 9:12 a.m.
Junior Mya Morgan of Elizabeth Forward is the defending 3A champion and will be in the first group and tee off at 8 a.m.
There will be a new 2A champion after 2023 winner Sophia Covelli of Neshannock graduated.
The final round of the 3A and 2A girls individual golf championships will be Sept. 30 at Butler Country Club.
First putts for gold
While the girls championships include both 3A and 2A on the same day, only the boys 2A qualifiers will hit the course Monday for the opening round of the 2024 WPIAL boys individual golf championships.
Youghiogheny Country Club in Elizabeth Township will host the first round of the championships that will consist of 37 golfers.
There will be seven groups of four golfers each and three groups of three golfers, with the first group teeing off at 9 a.m.
Last year’s winner was Nixen Erdely of Frazier. He has since graduated, leaving the door open for a new winner this fall.
The final round of the 2A boys individual golf championships will be Oct. 2 at Sewickley Heights Golf Club.
