High school roundup for Sept. 18, 2024: Rematch set in WPIAL girls tennis finals

Shady Side Academy’s Meriwether McCargo and Penn-Trafford’s Mia Williams will square off in the WPIAL Class 3A girls tennis finals for the second straight year.
McCargo, the top seed and defending champ, beat Bulldogs teammate Brooke Henderson, a freshman, 6-2, 6-1, in the semifinals Wednesday. Williams, the 2022 WPIAL champ, defeated third-seeded Cami Fisher of Bethel Park, 6-2, 6-3.
McCargo defeated Williams, 7-6, 6-1, in last year’s finals.
The championship and consolation finals are set for 1 p.m. Thursday at Bethel Park. The top three finishers advance to the PIAA tournament in Class 3A and 2A.
Class 2A – Gabriella Dusi of Belle Vernon will have a chance to repeat as WPIAL champ when she meets second-seeded Grace Stitt of Hampton in Thursday’s finals. Dusi defeated fifth-seeded Anna Mrkonja of Beaver in the semifinals, 6-1, 6-1.
Stitt won a three-set thriller in the semifinals, coming back from a set down to defeat Sasha Hoffman of Greensburg Central Catholic, 2-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2.
Girls soccer
Beaver 4, Hopewell 1 – Annabella Marino and Lilia Battalini each had a goal and an assist to lead Beaver (8-0, 5-0) past Hopewell (0-6-1, 0-5) in Section 3-2A. Mia Furda also scored for the Bobcats.
Bethel Park 1, Elizabeth Forward 0 – Grace Ferency scored the only goal Bethel Park (5-2-2) needed in a shutout victory over Elizabeth Forward (2-4) in nonsection play. Freya Blatz kept a clean sheet.
Burrell 1, Shady Side Academy 0 – McKenna Miller scored the lone goal off a cross from Miley Kariotis while Dana Barczykowski kept a clean sheet as Burrell (5-2-1, 3-2) blanked Shady Side (3-5, 2-3) in Section 2-2A.
Carlynton 10, Serra Catholic 0 – Sophia O’Brien had two goals and two assists to lead Carlynton (7-2, 4-2) past Serra Catholic (0-6, 0-5) in Section 3-A.
Chartiers-Houston 1, Bentworth 0 – Cecilia Hess scored the decisive goal and Ella Richey recorded the shutout as Chartiers-Houston (6-2, 4-1) edged out Bentworth (6-1, 3-1) in Section 2-A.
Deer Lakes 4, Southmoreland 2 — Claire Cacurak tallied all four goals for Deer Lakes (4-2-2, 2-1) in a victory over Southmoreland (5-4, 3-2) in Section 4-2A.
Franklin Regional 2, West Mifflin 0 – Reilly Weaver scored in the first half and Brooke Blakley scored her first varsity goal in the second half as Franklin Regional (6-4, 5-1) blanked West Mifflin (1-6-1, 0-5-1) in Section 4-3A. Addison Ayres kept a clean net for the Panthers.
Freeport 4, Knoch 0 – Camryn Woods netted two goals and Sam Liput and Isabella Hubbard each tallied a goal as Freeport (6-1, 4-1) shut out Knoch (1-7-1, 1-4) in Section 2-2A. Ella McConville and Peyton Los each had two assists and Alyssa Alcorn preserved the shutout for the Yellowjackets.
Hampton 6, Penn Hills 0 – Olivia Hoffman scored a pair of goals to lead Hampton (7-2, 4-2) to a Section 1-3A win against Penn Hills (1-6-1, 1-5). Maggie Barnett, Olivia Graswick, Sydney Lewis and Harper Gibbons each netted a goal for the Talbots.
Kiski Area 6, Indiana 0 – Sophia Hranica scored two goals to lead Kiski Area (4-4, 4-2) to a Section 4-3A win against Indiana (2-6-1, 2-3-1). Camryn Kunz, Ellie Arnold, Marlea Reiner and Addison Bell each scored a goal for the Cavaliers.
Latrobe 9, Hempfield 0 – Annalyse Bauer recorded a hat trick while Liv Ross and Bri Hoffer each scored a pair of goals as Latrobe (3-2-1, 3-1) cruised to a Section 1-4A win over Hempfield (2-6, 1-3). Maddy Petruzzi added a goal and three assists and Sophia Trunzo netted a goal for the Wildcats.
Moon 1, Montour 0 – Ally D’Alesio scored off a feed from Kendall Dydek and Ainslie Romasco recorded a shutout for Moon (6-1, 6-0) in a Section 2-3A defeat of Montour (5-3-1, 3-2-1).
Oakland Catholic 4, Laurel Highlands 0 – Corinna Martella scored a hat trick, Ella Stackhouse added a goal and Nica Folino recorded the shutout for Oakland Catholic (4-4, 3-2) in a Section 3-3A win over Laurel Highlands (3-4, 2-3).
Penn-Trafford 4, Armstrong 0 – Riley McIntosh collected a goal and an assist, Isabella Rager, Teresa Fiore and Alexis Brown also scored and Miley Currie dished out a pair of assists to lead Penn-Trafford (7-2, 5-0) past Armstrong (1-8, 1-4) in Section 1-4A. Rease Solomon preserved the shutout.
Peters Township 6, Baldwin 0 – Taylor McCullough scored a brace while Cailin Martin, Julia Spergel and Milena Gill each netted a goal as Peters Township (8-0-1, 4-0-1) shut out Baldwin (5-5, 2-3) in a Section 2-4A matchup. Kiatlyn Strine and Kaylin Hoffman combined on a clean sheet for Peters. It was coach Pat Vereb’s 400th career win.
Plum 5, Greensburg Salem 0 – Ali Joyce had two goals and an assist and Gianna Revetta, Mia Nardo and Isla Filo also scored for Plum (7-0, 6-0) in a Section 4-3A win over Greensburg Salem (3-5, 1-5).
Pine-Richland 5, Allderdice 0 – Emme Kline, Lily De Jesus, Charlie Kline, Aubree Bennett and Lily Rosenwasser scored to lead Pine-Richland (6-2, 4-1) to a Section 3-4A win over Allderdice (3-6, 1-4). Shea Best made three saves to earn her fifth shutout of the season.
Quaker Valley 3, Avonworth 0 – June Lukasavage, Annabel Miko and Ari Bosh each scored a goal to lift Quaker Valley (6-2-1, 4-1) over Avonworth (4-5-1, 2-3) in Section 3-2A.
Riverview 10, Jeannette 1 – Mary Quinlan had four goals and an assist and Isabel Chaparro had a hat trick to help Riverview (5-1, 5-1) past Jeannette (0-5, 0-5) in Section 4-A. Katerina Tsambis, Juliette Brun and Madelyn Martino added a goal each for the Raiders. Reese Brennan scored for Jeannette.
Seneca Valley 7, North Hills 1 – Ashlee Libby and Karly Majeski each scored two goals as Seneca Valley (6-2, 4-0) bested North Hills (2-8, 0-5) in Section 3-4A. Cassie Leonard, Lexi Smith and Anna Iaquinta each tallied a goal for the Raiders.
Seton LaSalle 11, South Allegheny 0 – Angelina McGrath scored four goals, Brynlee Robinson and Kennedy Bakota each scored a pair and Anna Porter added another goal for Seton LaSalle (5-1-2, 4-0-1) in a Section 3-A shutout of South Allegheny (3-6, 1-5). Aubrey Satsuta and Torri Carter also scored for the Rebels.
South Fayette 9, Uniontown 1 – Milan Pennetti scored twice and Emily Sinton and Mia Deramo each added a goal and an assist to lead South Fayette (7-3, 5-0) past Uniontown (1-6, 0-5) in Section 3-3A. Reagan McLaughlin, Gabby Beinecke, Emma Ferrari, Kate Morally and Lex Deutschendorf also scored for the Lions.
South Park 6, Keystone Oaks 0 – Brooke Paylo had a hat trick, Alicia Riberich netted a pair of goals and Ari Beck also scored to power South Park (6-4, 6-0) over Keystone Oaks (6-5, 4-2) in a matchup of top teams in Section 1-2A.
Thomas Jefferson 7, Albert Gallatin 0 – Sami Maglicco registered a hat trick to lead Thomas Jefferson (5-3, 4-1) to a Section 3-3A victory over Albert Gallatin (1-6, 1-4).
Upper St. Clair 2, Mt. Lebanon 0 – Chloe Bird and Brooke Bodamer scored as Upper St. Clair (6-1-2, 3-0-2) beat Mt. Lebanon (4-4-1, 1-4) in Section 2-4A. Maddie Webb recorded the shutout for the Panthers.
Trinity 3, Chartiers Valley 2 – Abby Higgins scored a hat trick to boost Trinity (1-5, 1-5) over Chartiers Valley (0-6, 0-5) in Section 2-3A.
Waynesburg 7, California 0 – Kolbi Rastoka scored two goals and had three assists, Emily Rafferty netted two goals and had a pair of assists and Rylei Rastoka had a goal and two assists as Waynesburg (7-1, 4-1) rolled to a Section 2-A win over California (2-4-1, 1-2-1). Jaden Tretinik and Bree Clutter each chipped in with a goal and Peyton Cowell had a shutout for the Raiders.
West Allegheny 4, Blackhawk 0 – Chloe Hart scored a brace and had an assist while Mia Bardelli netted a goal and Maddie Pons had a goal and an assist to lead West Allegheny (6-2-1, 4-1) to a Section 2-3A win over Blackhawk (3-6, 2-4). Ally Frueh preserved the shutout for West A.
