Clairton rolls Greensburg Central Catholic in final game before stadium renovation

In its final home game before Neil C. Brown Stadium gets renovated, Clairton delivered a classic result. The Bears routed Greensburg Central Catholic, 47-0, to open Class A Eastern Conference play Friday night.

Despite the eventual blowout, the game was scoreless after the first quarter. Running back Drachir Jones and receiver Donte’ Wright each had rushing touchdowns in the second quarter, giving the Bears a 14-0 halftime lead.

“It took us a little time to get started,” coach Wayne Wade said. “We made some adjustments at halftime. Guys took care of what they needed to do up front.”

The floodgates opened in the second half. Jeffrey Thompson, Zaemear Correll and Taris Wooding each scored rushing touchdowns.

Jones rushed for two more touchdowns as well, including a 54-yard scamper. He finished the night with 20 carries for 217 yards and three touchdowns.

In addition to the shutout, Clairton only allowed the Centurions offense to collect three first downs. The Bears forced two turnovers, including a Correll interception in the fourth quarter. The Bears defense has still not given up a touchdown through four games.

“Everybody on the field is doing their job,” Wade said. “Guys are where they need to be. We’re a very fast team. If everybody does their job, that’s how it should work.”

It was the final chapter at the old school stadium for Wade, who has spent nearly his entire life at the facility. He says he’ll miss the old stadium, but is looking forward to the future.

“I was born and raised in this community,” he said. “I grew up here. I played on this field as a kid. I’ve been out here pretty much all my life. This is kind of bittersweet. I love the grass and I love the stadium, but I’m super excited about what it’s going to look like for the kids next year. They deserve it.”

With the loss, the Centurions fell to 1-2. They host Brentwood next week, looking to get their first conference win.

The Bears are now 4-0 and have outscored opponents 164-7. They’ll continue conference play at Frazier next week and will play their remaining 2024 home games at Thomas Jefferson’s stadium. For Wade, it’s all about improvement.

“We had a lot of penalties tonight and some stuff we need to clean up,” he said. “We have to keep getting better.”
