For only the second time ever, most high school football teams across the state completed two weeks before Sept. 1.

As we prepare for September football, you can feel the mercury falling back into the comfortable sweet spot with temps dipping back into the 50s overnight.

The weather and calendar aren’t the only things changing in the state high school football landscape prior to Week 2. The Trib HSSN state rankings also have a different look.

Six teams, one in each classification, dropped from the rankings this past week, opening the door for six 2024 debuts.

Out: Central Catholic, Manheim Central, Selinsgrove, Wyomissing, Farrell and Lackawanna Trail.

In: West Lawn Wilson, Garnet Valley, Jersey Shore, Scranton Prep, Taylor Riverside and Clairton.

There was no change to the top-ranked teams in each class even though St. Joe’s Prep in 6A lost in its season opener. It remains No. 1, as does Peters Township in 5A, Aliquippa in 4A, Northwestern Lehigh in 3A, Troy in 2A and Bishop Guilfoyle in A.

One game to watch this weekend is a battle of No. 3-ranked teams in 6A and 5A as Imhotep Charter hosts Chester.
