Greensburg Central Catholic transfer Anthony “A.J.” Tarpley is fully eligible to play basketball for the Centurions this winter.
The sophomore guard who transferred from Greensburg Salem had an eligibility hearing Monday at the WPIAL office in Scott. His transfer paperwork hadn’t received a sign off from Greensburg Salem administrators, but WPIAL executive director Scott Seltzer said the WPIAL board didn’t find Tarpley’s move to be athletically motivated.
The 6-foot-2 point guard averaged 13.8 points and seven assists as a freshman.
Tarpley is eligible for both the regular season and postseason since he transferred prior to 10th grade.
Under PIAA rules, most transfers after the start of 10th grade are ineligible for the playoffs for one year. Tarpley joins a Greensburg Central Catholic team that went 24-4 last season as the WPIAL Class 2A runner-up and reached the second round of states.
His eligibility hearing was one of four held Monday by the WPIAL. Only one transfer, Central Catholic freshman Owen Herrick, was denied eligibility.
Seltzer said the board found that Herrick’s transfer from Seneca Valley was motivated in some way by athletics. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound quarterback and linebacker was ruled ineligible for one year, but Central Catholic can appeal to the PIAA.
In a separate hearing, Central Catholic sophomore Zachary Gleason was granted eligibility after transferring from Chartiers Valley. The defensive back lists college offers from Pitt and Akron.
The WPIAL also granted eligibility to Pine-Richland’s Dajaun and Dajour Webb, who transferred from Seneca Valley. Dajaun Webb is a junior wide receiver and defensive back and Dajour is a sophomore lineman.
Seltzer said the Webbs are fully eligible.
