After changing his college allegiances, Franklin Regional graduate Chuck Tragesser continues to sharpen his golf game over the summer.

Tragesser was medalist at a recent Western Pennsylvania Golf Association Amateur Championship qualifying tournament, finishing with a flourish to advance.

A member at Willowbrook Country Club, he made two birdies and an eagle in his last three holes to post a 6-under-par 66 at Latrobe Elks Golf Club.

The WPGA Amateur is set for June 17-18 at Chartiers Country Club.

“I really haven’t been hitting it that well,” Tragesser told the WPGA. “I had some errant shots and have been fighting some things in my swing. But I was able to combat that.

“I made a nice putt on No. 1, hit it close on two and then hit it to 2 feet for eagle on three. It was nice to make some birdies and get in the red today.”

Tragesser, who finished two ahead of Louis Bruzda, a member at Sunnehanna Country Club, transferred after a year at Rhode Island and will play at Robert Morris.

Toryn it up

Franklin Regional junior softball player Toryn Fulton quietly put together one of the best seasons in the WPIAL this spring.

The 6-foot shortstop had an outrageuous slash line of .673/.722/1.296, with an OPS of 2.019.

The South Florida commit had eight doubles, three triples, seven home runs, 26 RBIs and 31 runs scored.

The No. 2 hitter in the order was intentionally walked 10 times.

Recruiting news

Recent Franklin Regional graduate Colin Masten will continue his basketball career at Westmoreland County Community College.

Now a National Junior College Athletic Association Division II program that can award modest athletic scholarships, WCCC is bringing in a number of talented players from Westmoreland and Allegheny counties.

A key role player in Franklin Regional’s run to the WPIAL and PIAA 5A finals last season, Masten was aggressive getting to the basket and as an outside shooter.

• Franklin Regional’s Tyler Stone will run cross country at Westmoreland County Community College.
