Achan Green’s redemption story happened right at Slippery Rock University on May 15.
Green missed out on qualifying for states last year due to an injury he suffered at the WPIAL Class 3A track championships. But Green was healthy this year and took advantage while competing at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
Green picked up a first-place finish at the 110-meter high hurdles by finishing in 14.61 seconds. He finished in third place in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 39.36 seconds.
Last season, Green tore his hamstring at the WPIAL championships.
Penn Hills also saw its 400-meter relay team qualify for states. Kal Booker, Maliah Powell, Jadyn Golden and Mackenzie McIntyre participated in the race.
Booker also finished in fourth place in the 100-meter dash and punched her ticket to the state meet.
Ronald Porter leaped a personal best in the boys long jump, hitting 21-7 to place fifth. Powell also reached a personal best in the 400, finishing in 58.85 seconds.
McIntyre hit a personal best in the 200 of 25.56 seconds.
The Indians had to battle through rain-soaked conditions. The weather forced the event to be stretched out over two days.
Penn Hills only had one state qualifier last season.
Indians honored
Penn Hills had four players selected for the Big 56 All-Conference Class 5A baseball team. Seniors Philamore Austin, Edward Bowser, Connor Lehman and Conner Bollinger were all chosen as honorable mentions.
Irish named 1st team
Outfielder London Irish led the Penn Hills softball team on the Big 56 All-Conference Class 5A softball team. Shania Lewis was chosen as a second-team infielder and Lauren Sipple was chosen as a utility player.
Penn Hills finished the season with a 6-9 record and was 1-9 in Section 1-5A play.
