High school roundup for May 13, 2024: 11th-seeded Latrobe knocks off No. 6 Trinity in 5A softball

Madi Balko crushed a two-run homer, and Sami Kronenwetter smashed an RBI double in a three-run fourth inning to lead 11th-seeded Latrobe to a 5-1 upset victory over No. 6 Trinity in a WPIAL Class 5A first-round softball game Monday.

Winning pitcher Kayla Williams gave up one run on three hits and struck out five, inlcuding the 400th of her career, in a complete game. She was also 2 for 4 at the plate with an RBI double. Maddie Ray struck out four in five innings and Nina Christy drove in the only run for the Hillers (11-6).

Latrobe (10-10) will face No. 3 West Allegheny in the quarterfinals Wednesday.

Armstrong 9, Western Beaver 5 – Abigail Bauer and Emma Paul each homered, doubled and brought in two runs to power top-seeded Armstrong (15-3) to a Class 5A first-round victory over No. 16 Western Beaver (6-7). Isabel Prazenica knocked in a pair of runs and Shelby Cloak doubled and brought in a run for the River Hawks.

Abby Tomkowski belted a two-run home run and Bella Colatriano doubled and drove in a run for the Golden Beavers.

Madison Baker picked up the win for Armstrong, which will advance to play No. 8 Connellsville in Wednesday’s quarterfinals.

Blackhawk 7, Belle Vernon 5 – Karma Malcolm swatted a solo home run and Zoey Lindner went 2 for 4 with a double and three RBIs as No. 11 Blackhawk (8-7) toppled No. 6 Belle Vernon (13-7) in the Class 4A opening round.

Lauren VanDivner crushed a three-run home run and Bella Williams drove in a pair of runs for the Leopards.

Peyton Kimberlin struck out six and gave up three hits for the win and Kylie Prisuta struck out three in two shutout innings for the Cougars, who will face No. 3 seed Indiana in the quarterfinals Wednesday.

Chartiers Valley 14, Highlands 4 – Delaney O’Connor went 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles and collected five RBIs, Caitlin O’Farrell went 2 for 2 with three runs driven in, and Annabelle Helt doubled in two runs to lead No. 4 seed Chartiers Valley (15-3) to a Class 4A first-round win against No. 13 Highlands (3-14).

Bailey Megats and Madison Gorney each knocked in a run for the Golden Rams.

Lily Duffill doubled and drove in a run and Taylor Walsh struck out four in three innings to get the win for the Colts, who will face No. 5 seeded Montour in Wednesday’s quarterfinals.

Montour 16, McKeesport 8 – Shania Cope was 4 for 5 with a double and drove in six runs to lead an offensive explosion for No. 5 Montour (10-6) in an opening-round win against No. 12 McKeesport (7-11) in Class 4A. Winning pitcher Delaney Barto and Paige Fielder each doubled and brought home three runs while Giacinta Labrie knocked in a pair for the Spartans.

Madison Miller and Christina Wos each drove in a pair of runs for the Tigers.

Danielle Terpack went 2 for 5 with a double and an RBI for Montour, which will play No. 4 Chartiers Valley in the quarterfinal round Wednesday.

North Hills 9, Mars 8 – Down 8-5 in the bottom of the seventh, No. 2 seed North Hills (14-4) rallied to score four runs to prevail over No. 15 seeded Mars (6-13) in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs. Savannah Bodnar smacked an RBI double to make it 8-6, Natalie Anzaldi slashed a two-run triple to tie the game, and Kaylee Bischoff delivered the walk-off single for the Indians.

Gabrielle Rapport went 4 for 4 with a double and two RBIs and Steph Esswine was 3 for 4 with a double and drove in a run for the Fightin’ Planets.

Abigail Sutton picked up the win for North Hills, which will take on No. 10 seed Thomas Jefferson in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.

Thomas Jefferson 6, South Fayette 4 – Zoe Krizan belted a two-run home run, Adalina Bracco hit a pair of doubles and knocked in a run, and Morgan Alisesky doubled and brought in a run as No. 10 seeded Thomas Jefferson (10-7) bested No. 7 seed South Fayette (11-6) in the opening round of the Class 5A playoffs.

Maddie Cavenaugh hit a solo home run and Stephanie Binek went 2 for 3 with an RBI for the Lions.

Aubrey Shaffer got the win for the Jaguars, who will play No. 2 seed North Hills in Wednesday’s quarterfinals.

West Allegheny 12, Fox Chapel 1 – Ava Benish went 3 for 3 with a home run, a double and three RBIs, Ava Henke tripled, doubled and drove in a pair, and Cali Fiscus doubled and knocked in two as No. 3 West Allegheny (17-2) defeated No. 14 Fox Chapel (7-10) in the Class 5A first round. Mia Dunleavey had a base hit for the Foxes.

Winning pitcher Autumn Bielecki struck out four and gave up one run in five innings for West Allegheny, which will face No. 11 Latrobe in the quarterfinal round Wednesday.

West Mifflin 10, Uniontown 1 – Rylie Dobnak tossed a complete game, allowed one run on four hits and fanned 13 to lead No. 9 West Mifflin (10-8) to a Class 4A first-round win. Mia Bey went 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles, a triple and four RBIs and Jasalin Guenther drove in two runs for the Titans.

Ava Livingood was 2 for 3 with two doubles and Lauren White drove in the only run for No. 8 Uniontown (8-7).

Samantha Tomko doubled twice and knocked in a run and Aubrey Jaskulski tripled for West Mifflin, which will take on top-seeded Elizabeth Forward in the quarterfinals Wednesday.

Boys lacrosse

Shaler 17, Moon 4 – Jacob Cable had four goals and an assist and Trevor Cignetti racked up three goals and two assists to lead No. 6 Shaler (12-5) to a Class 2A first-round win over No. 11 Moon (7-9). Gavin Smallwood scored three goals and Peter Hughes and Noah Demchsin each added two for the Titans, who will meet No. 3 Penn-Trafford in Wednesday’s quarterfinals.

In other first-round games Monday, No. 8 Seton LaSalle beat No. 9 Latrobe, 9-7, No. 5 Bethel Park took care of No. 12 Quaker Valley, 15-11, and No. 7 Indiana defeated No. 10 Freeport, 11-3.

Girls lacrosse

Fox Chapel 18, Butler 4 – Caroline Grimsley scored five goals, Sydney Schutzman netted four and Caroline Leland recorded a hat trick to lead No. 4 Fox Chapel (13-4) past No. 13 Butler (7-8) in the opening round of the Class 3A playoffs. Fox Chapel will play No. 5 Shady Side Academy in the quarterfinals Wednesday. The Bulldogs beat No. 12 Norwin, 13-7.

Peters Township 21, Seneca Valley 8 – Lani Filoon scored five goals while Grace Kail and Ava Maloni each scored four goals and Dana Anderson recorded a hat trick as No. 6 seed Peters (10-8) won convincingly over No. 11 Seneca Valley (4-11) in the opening round of the Class 3A playoffs.

Lorena Lopez scored four goals and Lydia Miller added a pair for the Raiders. Emma Kail and Eiley Zurich scored two goals apiece for the Indians, who advance to play No. 3 Upper St. Clair in Wednesday’s quarterfinals.

In other Class 3A first-round games Monday, No. 8 North Allegheny beat No. 9 Sewickley Academy, 15-12, and No. 7 Canon-McMillan topped No. 10 North Hills, 18-5.
