High school roundup for April 20, 2024: North Allegheny softball rallies past Baldwin

Carlyn Vaupel went 4 for 4, including a double and solo home run, as North Allegheny overcame a five-run deficit to defeat Baldwin, 10-8, in Section 1-6A softball Saturday.

Anne Melle singled and doubled for the Tigers (5-3, 5-3). Maddy Schumacher went 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs for the Highlanders (3-7, 2-6).

Leechburg 9, Monessen 6 – Addie Zanotto had two triples and four RBIs to lead Leechburg (4-3, 3-2) to the Section 3-A win against Monessen (3-5, 3-4). Laney Aul added two RBIs for Leechburg, which trailed 6-4 heading into the bottom of the sixth. Kendra Jones tripled for the Greyhounds.

Mohawk 9, Hopewell 2 – Aricka Young had two doubles and three RBIs as Mohawk (9-1, 5-0) beat Hopewell (4-8, 1-5) in Section 2-3A. Reagan Magno picked up the complete-game win, giving up four hits and striking out eight. Chloe Nale doubled and hit a solo home run for Hopewell.

South Park 10, East Allegheny 0 – In South Park’s second game of the day, Reese Katich threw a five-inning no-hitter against East Allegheny (1-6), striking out 10 and walking one. Kaitlyn Mattas had a double and drove in four runs while Mady Wilder went 2 for 2 and scored twice for South Park (9-1).

South Park 5, Keystone Oaks 0 – In Section 2-3A, Sydney Sekely struck out 15 while pitching a four-hit shutout as South Park (8-1, 5-0) beat Keystone Oaks (3-6, 0-5). Sekely was also 2 for 3 with a solo homer run and a double.

West Allegheny 15, Montour 0 – Ava Benish hit a grand slam as West Allegheny (13-1) scored 12 runs in the third inning in its nonsection win against Montour (3-5). Savanna Benish doubled, walked and drove in five runs for West Allegheny, which won its ninth-straight game.

Baseball

Ambridge 10, Eden Christian 6 – Teagan Baker had three hits, including a double, and two RBIs and Adam Fernandez singled, tripled and drove in a run to lead Ambridge (3-6) to a nonsection win. Naz Thompson singled, doubled and plated a pair for the Bridgers. Caleb Emswiler singled, doubled and had two RBIs and Brady Hull doubled and drove in two for Eden Christian (9-2).

Connellsville 18, Yough 3 – Grayden Gillott doubled twice and drove in four runs and Jonathan Kelly went 3 for 3 with a pair of RBIs to lead Connellsville (6-6) to a nonsection win. John Steban had two hits and drove in three runs for Yough (3-6).

Cumberland Valley 13, North Allegheny 3 – Gavin Krndrick went 2 for 2 with two fdoubles and three RBIs to lead Cumberland Valley. August Maslo singled twice and doubled for North Allegheny (9-2).

Juniata Valley 10, McKeesport 6 – Mason Buckley went 4 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs to lead Juniata Valley. Matt Miller had three hits and two RBIs and Brady Boyle singled, doubled and plated two for McKeesport (0-10).

Ligonier Valley 3, Richland 2 – Noah Knupp doubled and drove in a run and Henrik Elik pitched 3 ⅔ innings of scoreless relief to lead Ligonier Valley (4-6) to a nonsection win. Luke Raho doubled and drove in a run for Richland.

Mohawk 21, Beaver Falls 6 – Jay Wrona had a double, home run and two RBIs as Mohawk (9-1, 7-0) scored 16 runs in the second inning in its three-inning win over Beaver Falls (0-9, 0-9) in Section 1-3A. Mason Hopper went 2 for 2 with a triple and two runs for Mohawk.

OLSH 14, Washington 1 – Gino Williams went 2 for 2 with three RBIs and three runs scored as OLSH (7-4) beat Washington (5-5) in a five-inning nonsection game. Quinn Santelli picked up the win, striking out seven over five innings.

Poland (Ohio) 16, Shenango 8 – Carmine Tukalo went 3 for 5 with two doubles to lead Poland. Grayson Hooks singled twice, doubled and drove in two runs and Sam Patton had three hits for Shenango (5-5).

Portage 10, McKeesport 5 – Easton Slanoc went 4 for 5 with two doubles and two RBIs to lead Portage. Brady Boyle homered and Brayden Lindsay doubled for McKeesport (0-10).

Seton LaSalle 13, New Brighton 0 – Gio LoNero went 3 for 3 and drove in two runs as Seton LaSalle (8-1, 7-0) defeated New Brighton (4-4, 2-4) in a five inning Section 2-2A game. Michael Todd went 2 for 4 with three RBIs.

Windber 13, Ligonier Valley 3 – In six innings, Dawson Himes, Mason Horner and Andrew Scalia drove in two runs each as Windber beat Ligonier (4-6) in a nonsection game. Tyler Smith went 3 for 3 and drove in three Ligonier Valley runs.

Girls lacrosse

Upper St. Clair 6, Shady Side Academy 3 – Anna Capobres had two goals and an assist and Molly Powell, Riley Powell, Kat Mammarella and Sarah McShane also scored in a nonsection win for Upper St. Clair.

Track

Slippery Rock Invitational – Perry boys and Shenango girls won the team titles. For Perry, Brayden Richards was a triple winner, taking the 110 hurdles, pole vault and javelin.

Allderdice’s Will Tew won the 800 and 1,600 and teammates Brandon Diggs (300 hurdles) and Aran McNutt (2,000 steeplechase) also took first.

Other WPIAL winners were Penn-Trafford’s Matthew Sarnowski in the discus and the Ellwood City 1,600 relay and Apollo-Ridge 3,200 relay.

For the Shenango girls, Sara Roe won the long jump and triple jump and Zoe Bupp won the discus.

Laurel’s Tori Atkins was a double winner, taking the 200 and 400. Other WPIAL winners were Apollo-Ridge’s Sophia Ward in the high jump, Freedom’s Aurea Hickenboth in the pole vault and Beaver Falls’ Mikayla Anderson in the shot put.

Perry got girls wins from Audrey Morgan-Ard in the 1,600 and the 3,200 relay team.

Roddick High School Invitational – Peyton Murray had the best discus throw in Pennsylvania this year with a distance of 186-3 at Shippensburg. Murray also took third in the shot put.
