High school roundup for April 18, 2024: Central Catholic clears bases for walk-off win over Baldwin

Carson Pettyjohn hit a walk-off bases-clearing double to lead Central Catholic to a 5-4 victory over Baldwin in Section 2-6A baseball Thursday.
Yaniel Heredia added a double for the Vikings (7-6, 4-5). Matt Musial singled, tripled and had an RBI for Baldwin (2-9, 1-5).
Bentworth 4, Frazier 3 – Lucas Burt struck out 13 in 5⅔ innings and John Scott doubled to lead Bentworth (1-7, 1-6) to a Section 1-2A win. Tyler Monack hit a double for Frazier (4-6, 2-3).
Blackhawk 7, North Catholic 4 – Steve Knallay, Luca Dilionardo and Grant Landsberry smacked a double apiece for Blackhawk (3-4) in a nonsection win. Knallay had a pair of RBIs. Anthony Sewecke doubled for North Catholic (5-3).
Brentwood 7, Carlynton 4 – Blaize Diaz and Zach Wuenschell homered and Aiden Gordon and Michael O’Leary doubled to lead Brentwood (2-6) to a nonsection win. Jake Moldovan and Mason Mulligan hit a double apiece for Carlynton (8-5).
Clairton 7, Cornell 2; Clairton 23, Cornell 14 – Clairton (3-5, 2-4) swept Cornell (0-7, 0-6) in a Section 3-A doubleheader. In the first game, Jeff Thompson doubled twice and Adonte Williams singled and doubled for Clairton. Cody Chetoka and Joshua Mozuch doubled for Cornell. In the second game, Thompson had two doubles and two RBIs for Clairton and Christopher Jackson doubled and drove in three for Cornell.
Fort Cherry 15, Carmichaels 5 – Ben Demascal went 2 for 3 with a homer and two RBIs and Colton Temple went 3 for 4 with a double and four RBIs to lead Fort Cherry (6-1, 4-1) to a Section 1-A win. Luke Sweder doubled twice and Matt Sieg and Ryan Huey each had a single and double for the Rangers. Liam Lohr had two hits and two RBIs for Carmichaels (6-1, 4-1).
Hempfield 3, Canon-McMillan 2 – Anthony DeMarco hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth to help Hempfield (12-1, 8-1) take two of three from Canon-McMillan (4-7, 4-5) in a Section 2-6A series. Caden Biondi drove in a pair of runs and Adam Hess was the winning pitcher for the Spartans. Alexander Shank had two hits for the Big Macs.
Knoch 14, Highlands 4 – Aidan Jones, Braden Wozniak, Dante Pelloni, Kyle Morgan and Sean Morgan doubled and Cooper Allison tripled for Knoch (3-6, 2-4) in a Section 1-4A win. Kyle Morgan had three RBIs and Allison drove in two. Boyd Brown had a pair of hits and RBIs for Highlands (2-9, 1-5).
Latrobe 4, Gateway 3 – Luke Nipar-Smith hit an RBI groundout and Brody Rumon followed with a run-scoring single in a two-run seventh to help Latrobe (10-1) top Gateway (0-10) in a nonsection game. Jack Stynchula pitched a complete game with six strikeouts for the Wildcats. Elliot Sterner had a single and an RBI for the Gators.
Montour 4, Hampton 1 – Jason George doubled and drove in a run for Montour (10-1) in a nonsection win. Sean Sullivan had a double and an RBI for Hampton (4-5).
Mt. Pleasant 7, McGuffey 0 – Luke Nicotera threw a three-hit shutout with seven strikeouts, and C.J. Nestor singled, doubled and drove in a run for Mt. Pleasant (7-4, 5-1) in a Section 4-3A win over McGuffey (3-4, 3-3).
Neshannock 5, Beaver 4 – Giovanni Valentine drove in four runs and Joey Veronesi hit a double to lead Neshannock (5-4) to a nonsection win. Logan Hill hit a double for Beaver (5-8).
North Allegheny 8, Allderdice 4 – Andrew Dixon, J.D. Costanzo, JJ Mancuso and Miles Pealer hit a double each for North Allegheny (9-0, 6-0) in a Section 1-6A win over Allderdice (1-9, 0-8). Costanzo, Mancuso and Pealer had an RBI.
Peters Township 11, Indiana 6 – Jackson Stocker and Zachary Miner homered, Michael Alspaugh doubled twice and Will Somers singled and tripled to lead Peters Township (5-7) to a nonsection win. Ben Ryan went 3 for 4 with two doubles, a homer and five RBIs for Indiana (6-3).
Pine-Richland 3, Seneca Valley 2 – Sam Heckert provided the go-ahead run with an RBI single in the top of the seventh and drove in all three runs to propel Pine-Richland (11-2, 7-1) past Seneca Valley (5-4-1, 3-3) in Section 1-6A. Anthony Mengine had three hits, including a double, for the Rams. Benny Husted and Jake Waddell added a double apiece.
Ringgold 5, Belle Vernon 4 – Alex Kolano singled, doubled and drove in four runs, including a two-run single in a three-run seventh, to lead Ringgold (3-6, 1-4) to a Section 2-4A win. Adam LaCarte singled, doubled and drove in two runs and Parker Lind had a single and double for Belle Vernon (7-2, 4-1).
Riverside 15, Beaver Falls 0 – Zack Hare, Christian Lucarelli and Darren McDade each threw a perfect inning in a three-inning victory for Riverside (7-0, 6-0) over Beaver Falls (0-8, 0-8) in Section 1-3A. Jackson Barber doubled and drove in two runs and Ashton Schlosser had two hits and two RBIs for Riverside.
Shady Side Academy 11, Penn Hills 6 – Matt Long hit two doubles, Soren Cooper hit a double and Jonah Sackrowitz tripled for Shady Side Academy (5-3) in a nonsection win. Anthony Sipple and Isaiah Mitchell hit a double apiece for Penn Hills (0-9).
Shaler 9, Butler 3 – Joey Rispoli hit a double and Brady McGuire had two singles for Shaler (10-2) in a nonsection win. Noah Kollinger hit two singles for Butler (3-8).
Springdale 4, St. Joseph 1 – John Hughes pitched a complete-game two-hitter with 16 strikeouts to lead Springdale (3-2, 3-1) past St. Joseph (1-6, 1-6) in Section 2-A. Dustin Werksman singled and drove in a pair for the Dynamos. Owen Swanson struck out 10 and doubled for the Spartans.
Uniontown 9, Albert Gallatin 2 – Wyatt Nehls hit two doubles and had three RBIs and Tate Musko tripled to lead Uniontown (4-4, 3-2) to a Section 2-4A win over Albert Gallatin (2-8, 2-3).
Washington 12, Monessen 0 – Caleb Patton threw a no-hitter, striking out 14 and walking two, to lead Washington (5-4) to a nonsection win over Monessen (0-9). Ayvari Chandler doubled, tripled and drove in four runs and Ian Callan, Kyle Bainer and Joseph Wilson singled and doubled for the Little Prexies.
West Greene 11, Cameron (WV) 2 – Colten Thomas went 2 for 4 with two runs scored and five stolen bases and winning pitcher Morgan Kiger struck out 11 to lead West Greene (5-2) to a nonsection win. Hunter Evans had two hits and an RBI for Cameron.
West Mifflin 5, Upper St. Clair 3 – Corey Kuszaj had two singles and an RBI for West Mifflin (12-1) in a nonsection win. Nolan Wilson tripled and Nico D’Orazio and Thomas Medwig each doubled for Upper St. Clair (4-8).

Avonworth 8, Burrell 6 – Sydney Savatt hit a home run and Jayla Jones and Mara Stetser each doubled to lead Avonworth (4-3, 2-1) to a Section 1-3A win. Pyper Ferres hit two doubles and a home run for Burrell (6-3, 4-1).
Belle Vernon 9, Albert Gallatin 8 – Gracie Sokol hit a double and home run, Katie Sokol homered and Lauren Van Divner had three singles and three RBIs to lead Belle Vernon (10-2, 5-2) to a Section 2-4A win. Mya Glisan doubled for Albert Gallatin (1-6, 1-5).
Bentworth 15, Fort Cherry 0 – Sydney Gonglik threw a three-inning perfect game and Kylie Glaze hit a grand slam for Bentworth (7-2, 5-0) in a Section 3-2A win over Fort Cherry (0-8, 0-7). Willow Eckles hit two doubles and Gonglik doubled for the Bearcats.
Blackhawk 5, North Catholic 4 – Mia Yenges, Zoey Linder and Brynn Hysong hit a double apiece and Addy Ramer drove in two runs to lead Blackhawk (3-3, 2-3) to a Section 3-4A win. Kennedy Brown hit two doubles and Natalia Rushak homered for North Catholic (5-2, 2-2).
Charleroi 12, Beth-Center 0 – Sofia Celaschi threw a five-inning no-hitter with 11 strikeouts for Charleroi (7-2, 4-2) in a Section 3-2A win over Beth-Center (2-2, 2-2). Riley Jones hit a triple for the Cougars.
Chartiers Valley 7, Montour 3 – Taylor Walsh had a double and three RBIs, Delaney O’Connor tripled and Annabelle Helt doubled to lead Chartiers Valley (5-2, 3-1) to a Section 3-4A win. Shania Cope hit a double for Montour (2-4, 2-4).
Connellsville 11, Trinity 10 – Iris Burd struck out 10 and hit a walk-off RBI single in seventh for Connellsville (8-3, 4-1) in a Section 4-5A win. Alexa Zawacki, Hanna Suhoski and Remmie Seitz hit a home run apiece for Trinity (7-3, 3-2). Kirra Davis hit a double and home run for the Falcons.
Ellwood City 6, Quaker Valley 0 – Julia Nardone hit two doubles and Sara Schwarz drove in two runs for Ellwood City (8-1, 4-1) in a Section 2-3A win. Winning pitcher Amber McQuinston struck out 11 and allowed only one hit. Isabella Jarrett singled for Quaker Valley (3-5, 1-4).
Freedom 28, Aliquippa 12 – Emiliee Waggoner, Rylie Vojtko and Brianne Casto drove in three runs apiece and Hayden Baucan hit a home run to lead Freedom (1-5, 1-4) to a Section 1-2A win over Aliquippa (1-4, 0-4).
Hempfield 12, Butler 0 – Julia Varhola and Hannah Uhrenek combined on a six-inning two-hit shutout and Mia Shipman hit a three-run homer for Hempfield (7-1, 6-1) in a Section 1-6A win over Butler (2-6, 1-6).
Indiana 17, Woodland Hills 0 – Addie Stossel and Kylee Cass combined on a five-inning no-hitter and Ella Myers, Hannah Ianarelli and Olivia Zimmerman each doubled for Indiana (6-3, 4-0) in a Section 1-4A win over Woodland Hills (0-5, 0-4).
Jefferson-Morgan 17, Avella 1 – Emilee Bazzoli struck out 10 and hit a double for Jefferson-Morgan (2-4, 2-2) in a Section 2-A win. Taylor Shirley hit a double for Avella (3-6, 0-5). Addalei Larkin, Asslynn Snyder and Kayla Larkin each doubled for the Rockets.
Ligonier Valley 2, Southmoreland 1 – Cheyenne Piper threw a three-hit shutout and struck out 11 for Ligonier Valley (6-1, 3-1) in a Section 3-3A win. Sydnee Foust and Neve Dowden drove in runs for the Rams. Taylor Doppleheuer had a double and an RBI for Southmoreland (9-1, 4-1).
Mt. Pleasant 11, Valley 0 – Kendall Waters went 3 for 3 with a double and two RBIs and Emma Leechalk homered to lead Mt. Pleasant (5-4) to a nonsection win. Dani Trainer threw a five-inning, one-hit shutout with seven strikeouts. Jessica Staraniec singled for Valley (0-9).
Neshannock 10, Riverside 0 – Abigail Measel struck out nine, Addy Frye hit a double and home run and Miley Anderson homered for Neshannock (7-0, 5-0) in a Section 1-2A win. Saeryn Hoover singled for Riverside (3-4, 3-3).
North Allegheny 14, Canon McMillan 3 – Anne Melle hit a double and home run, Sammy Plotsko homered and Taylor Neese doubled to lead North Allegheny (4-2, 4-2) to a Section 1-6A win. Skylah Steban hit two doubles for Canon McMillan (3-4, 3-4).
Northgate 11, Rochester 7 – Johna Abramowicz struck out 11 and went 2 for 3 with three RBIs to lead Northgate (1-5, 1-3) to a Section 1-A win. Ashlyn Schidemantle hit two singles and drove in two runs for Rochester (3-4, 2-3).
Norwin 7, Mt. Lebanon 4 – Bailey Snowberger and Isabella Deering each hit two-run doubles during a five-run seventh inning and Joey Michalski hit a two-run homer to lead Norwin (5-6, 4-5) to a Section 1-6A win. Rebecca Davis and Mary Langston each hit a home run for Mt. Lebanon (1-9, 1-7). Brookelyn Kotch struck out 11 for the Knights.
Plum 16, Penn Hills 1 – Liana Yusko homered and Danielle Pici, Jaiden Gentile and Makenzie Marotta each doubled for Plum (6-3, 3-2) in a Section 1-5A win. Lauren Sipple hit a home run for Penn Hills (3-4, 1-4).
Seneca Valley 2, Baldwin 0 – Lexie Hames threw a one-hit shutout with 19 strikeouts and Kara Pasquale doubled to lead Seneca Valley (10-0, 7-0) to a Section 1-6A win. Kaylee Smalko singled for Baldwin (2-6, 1-5).
Shenango 15, New Brighton 0 – Kenndi Lynn threw a three-inning no-hitter and struck out seven for Shenango (6-4, 6-1) in a Section 1-2A win over New Brighton (1-8, 0-6). Zoe Offie went 3 for 3 with a triple and three RBIs and Brianna Aluisa and Emma Herb each doubled for the Wildcats.
South Side 14, Carlynton 0 – Maya Ringhoff threw a five-inning perfect game, Madison Morrow hit three doubles and Kenidi Cook hit two doubles for South Side (5-2, 4-0) in a Section 1-A win over Carlynton (4-4, 3-3).
Uniontown 6, Ringgold 2 – Delaney Ansell hit a home run and Nellie Budinsky doubled to lead Uniontown (6-1, 6-0) to a Section 2-4A win. Daniella Vecchio hit two singles for Ringgold (1-7, 1-5).
Waynesburg 10, Keystone Oaks 0 – Mikaylynn Good hit a home run and Breanna Kerr and Ellie Makel each hit two doubles for Waynesburg (4-6, 2-2) in a Section 4-3A win over Keystone Oaks (2-5, 0-4). Gina Tedrow struck out 13 and hit a double for the Raiders.
West Allegheny 4, Western Beaver 1 – Savanna Benish homered and Aubrey Police had two singles for West Allegheny (11-1, 5-0) in a Section 3-5A win. Abby Tomkowski hit two singles for Western Beaver (3-3, 2-3).
West Greene 5, Mapletown 4 – Payton Gilbert doubled and Marissa Tharp hit three singles to lead West Greene (5-3, 4-1) to a Section 2-A win over Mapletown (3-4, 3-2).
Girls lacrosse
Pine-Richland 16, North Hills 3 – Cate Gentille scored five goals, including the 100th of her career, to lead Pine-Richland to a Section 2-3A win. Madeline Mill added four goals and Taylor Wilkinson and Mallory Boivin finished with two apiece for the Rams. Abigail Krogmann scored three goals for North Hills.
Upper St. Clair 16, Hempfield 2 – Anna Capobres scored five goals and Katie Sweeney added three to lead Upper St. Clair to a Section 1-3A win.
Boys volleyball
Penn-Trafford 3, Latrobe 0 – Bradley Heinbaugh had 14 kills, Nathaniel Rugh 36 assists and Drew Sherwin 14 digs to lead Penn-Trafford (7-2) to a nonsection win. Keith Otto added eight kills and Owen Gisi had four kills and two blocks. Game scores were 25-17, 25-20, 25-19.
