North Allegheny notebook: Tigers freshman Advaita Sircar claims WPIAL singles title

North Allegheny freshman Advaita Sircar made the most of his inaugural WPIAL tournament opportunity as he took down No. 1 seed Adam Memije, a junior from Gateway, in three sets to capture a Class 3A boys tennis singles title.

He won the first set 6-2 and saw Memije rally for a 6-3 win in set two before claiming the third set 6-3 to secure the gold medal.

“I played pretty good throughout the tournament,” said Sircar, who punched his ticket to the finals with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Memije’s Gateway teammate, junior No. 3 seed Zidaan Hassan, in the semifinals Tuesday at North Allegheny.

“The final was so hard. (Memije) is just so fast. He just doesn’t miss. He hits the ball hard, and he’s so accurate. He kept moving me around.”

The championship and consolation matches April 10 in both Class 3A and Class 2A were moved from the outside courts at North Allegheny to Glen Creek Tennis Club in South Park because of the threat of rain.

“I prefer inside way more because I like faster courts, and outside is too slow, and it’s in the sun,” Sircar said. “The wind also, it affects my game too much.”

Both players secured a spot in the PIAA tournament May 24-25 at the Hershey Racquet Club.

“I am excited because it will be my first time playing at states,” Sircar said.

Girls flag football starts season

North Allegheny’s Varsity Gold girls flag football team picked up a pair of wins on the season’s opening weekend April 7, at Newman Stadium.

The Tigers defeated Hampton, 44-6, and North Catholic, 26-0. The Varsity Black team lost to Shaler, 31-14.

Ally Ruiz scored five touchdowns in the two wins, including two interception returns for scores.

NA baseball tops Butler

David Posey had four RBIs, August Maslo tripled and drove in two runs, and Matthew Parreaguirre and Owen Schall each doubled as North Allegheny beat Butler, 12-4, in a Section 1-6A baseball game April 9.

Greg Schmidt got the win for the Tigers, who also beat Butler, 8-6, on April 8, and improved to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in section play.

Girls lacrosse quiets Golden Tornado

Isla Abrams and Avery Anderson each had four goals, and Reagan Riordan added three as North Allegheny rolled to a 15-3 victory over Butler in a Section 2-3A girls lacrosse match April 9.

Sarah Donaldson, Madelyn Lemmon, Gracie Lynch and Tessa McDowell also scored. Izzie Trunzo made six saves to earn the win for the Tigers (1-4, 1-2).

Softball team tops Norwin, P-R

Julia Drazga hit a walk-off single in the seventh as North Allegheny (2-1, 2-1) edged Norwin, 6-5, in a Section 1-6A softball game April 10.

Carlyn Vaupel smashed a home run and drove in three while Sammy Plotsko went 3 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs for the Tigers.

Also last week, Plotsko hit two home runs and had six RBIs and Anne Melle and Taylor Neese homered to lead North Allegheny to a 16-1 victory over Pine-Richland.

Boys volleyball blanks Foxes

North Allegheny’s boys volleyball team scored a 3-0 win over Fox Chapel, 25-13, 25-20, 25-20, on April 9.

Stone Gaertner had 12 kills, and Will Robertson added nine kills. Will Hahn had 15 digs. Nicolas Carioto and Ryan Quatman combined for 36 assists for the Tigers (3-0, 3-0 Section 2-3A).
