North Allegheny notebook: Tigers hockey team advances to PIHL finals

North Allegheny used three first-period goals to defeat No. 3-seeded Seneca Valley, 4-2, in the PIHL Class 3A Penguins Cup semifinals March 11, at Robert Morris’ Island Sports Center.
No. 2 North Allegheny got first-period tallies at 3:15 from Ed Scherer, 11:59 from Luke Walkauskas and 16:12 from Gianni Lochiatto. Walkauskas had an assist on the first Tigers goal.
Jacob Gilbert scored for the Raiders at 7:37 of the second on a pass from Ian Uram before the Raiders made it 3-2 just 2:49 into the third on a fortuitous bounce from behind the net that was guided in by Marshall Hewitt with Ethan Lindberg getting an assist.
Mark Joyson scored an empty-netter with 24 seconds left to lock it up and send the Tigers to the title game.
Camden Junker stopped 29 shots for North Allegheny and Cenzo Ditulli turned back 16 of the 19 he faced in the loss.
North Allegheny was scheduled to face Pine-Richland in the championship game Tuesday (March 19).
Rumpler takes silver at PIAA championships
North Allegheny’s Leyna Rumpler came up just short of a gold medal at the first PIAA girls wrestling championships March 9 in Hershey, dropping a 1-0 decision to Hickory’s Avry Ryhal in the finals at 155 pounds.
Ryhal scored the lone point with an escape midway through the second period.
Rumpler nearly had a takedown at the end of the first period, but time ran out. She also came close to an escape in the third period two times, but Ryhal kept her grip on her as they ran out of the circle.
Rumpler, a senior who won the PIAA West Regional earlier this month and a WPIAL title in February, finished her season at 35-2 and her career at 102-20.
Buggey takes sixth at state tournament
North Allegheny senior Aidan Buggey went 3-3 at 215 pounds to finish in sixth place at the PIAA Class 3A boys wrestling tournament March 7-9, in Hershey.
The WPIAL runner-up, Buggey lost in the first round but then won three straight matches in the consolation bracket.
The Duquesne football recruit lost to Franklin Regional’s Juliano Marion, 3-1, in the fifth-place match. He finished the season 30-8 and ended his career with 110 wins.
North Allegheny sophomore Bradyn McConneha capped his season with a 24-14 record after going 2-2 at the PIAA tournament at 285 pounds.
NA girls fall in PIAA 2nd round
Callie Sperling scored 16 points, including the game-winning basket in overtime, as North Penn earned a 56-54 win over North Allegheny (23-4) in a PIAA Class 6A girls basketball second-round game March 12 at Bald Eagle Area.
Lydia Betz, a Goldey-Beacom College recruit, led all scorers with 21 points and Caroline Henderson, who will play at RIT, sank three 3-pointers and had 19 points for the Tigers.
