Hempfield, Freeport bowlers finish in top 5 at state championships

Hempfield’s Amelia Droste and Freeport’s Mackensie Livingston each reached the finals to lead the WPIBL contingent at the state boys and girls singles bowling championships Friday at Leisure Lanes in Lancaster.

Droste qualified third with a six-game series of 1,289, including a 247 game. She defeated CD East’s Rayana Gonzalez in the quarterfinals, 225-189, before falling to Warwick Taylor Miller, 232-225, in the semifinals.

Livingston qualified fifth with a 1,239 series including a 236 game. She lost a first-round match to Gonzalez, 222-203.

Deer Lakes’ Tia Germanich (1,189) finished sixth in qualifying, just missing out on a spot in the finals. Plum’s Mareana Pilyih (1,150) was tied for ninth.

Malia Briggs of Chambersburg won the state title, defeating Miller in the finals, 247-193.

On the boys side, Bishop Canevin’s Jonathan Bernotas (1,302) was the top WPIBL finisher in qualifying. He was sixth, 10 pins out of a spot in the finals. Greensburg Salem’s Dylan Megliorino (1,212) was ninth.

Archbishop Ryan’s Joseph McNalley won the state title, beating Garden Spot’s Gavin Courtney in the finals, 235-226.
