North Allegheny notebook: Joey Dopirak surpasses 1,000-point milestone

North Allegheny senior Joey Dopirak poured in 25 points in a 72-53 victory over Pine-Richland on Jan. 30, surpassing 1,000 career points in the process.

He became the ninth player in program history to reach the milestone.

The senior guard averages 21.3 points for the Tigers, who improved to 8-11 overall and 5-2 in Section 1-6A. They clinched a playoff berth with the victory.

Anthony Sciote hit six 3-pointers and finished with 22 points, and Ty Iwanonkiw added 12 for the Tigers. Carson Baer scored 14 and Vasilios added 11 for Pine-Richland (6-11, 2-5).

NA girls rebound from loss to Norwin

North Allegheny’s girls basketball team suffered its second loss of the season to Norwin after a 64-44 defeat on Jan. 25.

But the Tigers rebounded Jan. 30 with a 58-38 victory over Pine-Richland to improve to 16-2 overall and 5-2 in Section 1-6A.

Lydia Betz put up 15 points and Caroline Henderson and Kellie McConnell added 11 each for North Allegheny. Madison Zavasky led Pine-Richland (5-11, 3-4) with 19 points.

Spirit squad takes 3rd at PIAAs

North Allegheny earned a third-place finish at the PIAA competitive spirit championships Jan. 27 in Hershey.

The Tigers, competing in the Class 3A Large Division, were fourth after the preliminary round. They posted a score of 84.60 in the finals to finish behind St. Huberts (91.80) and Hempfield (87.03).

Penn-Trafford, Haverford and Baldwin rounded out the top six.

North Allegheny will compete at the national championships Feb. 7-12, at Walt Disney World in Orlando.

Rumpler wins tournament title

North Allegheny senior Leyna Rumpler claimed the 155-pound title at the Lady Raiders Invitational girls wrestling tournament Jan. 27, at Columbia High School in Ohio.

Rumper went 3-0 with three pins.

Also placing were Audrey Morrison (third at 145), Brenna Collery (fourth at 135), Hannah Williams (sixth at 115), Lorelei Bungard (sixth at 130), Anna Kovacic (seventh at 120) and Maya Scott (seventh at 140).

The Tigers finished sixth overall.

Tigers claim 1st-place finishes at indoor meet

Five members of the North Allegheny indoor track and field team finished first at a Tri-State Track Coaches Association meet Jan. 27, at Edinboro.

Kendall Lucas (800-meter run), Eva Kynaston (3,000), Lindsay Breneman (pole vault), Jack Bertram (3,000) and Nicholas Humphries (long jump) won their events.

Isabella Costa took second in the long jump and third in the 400.

Buggey reaches 100-win milestone

North Allegheny senior wrestler Aidan Buggey earned the 100th victory of his career Jan. 31 during the WPIAL team tournament.

Buggey earned a pin at 215 pounds to help the fifth-seeded Tigers defeat Baldwin, 55-15, in the WPIAL Class A first round.

Evan Schomburg (107), Charlie LaQuatra (114), Gus Stedeford (121), Griffen Reid (139), Travis Stipetich (152), Kellen Buggey (172) and Bradyn McConneha (heavyweight) also had pins in the victory.

North Allegheny then lost 26-19 to Bethel Park in the quarterfinals.

Aidan Buggey, Schomburg, Stedeford, Reid, Stipetich and Kellen Buggey (major) all won decisions for the Tigers, who finished the season with a 17-3 record.
