Trib HSSN girls basketball team of the week: Aliquippa Quips
Record: 5-0 in Section 1-2A, 10-1 overall
Last year: Aliquippa finished in third place in Section 1-2A with a record of 8-4, three games behind co-section champions and WPIAL finalists Shenango and Freedom. The Quips finished 12-12 overall, losing to Freedom in the district semifinals, 47-44, then falling to Maplewood in the first round of the state playoffs, 65-47.
#Earned: The Quips won a couple of nail-biters last week to take over sole possession of first place in the section. On Monday, Aliquippa edged Rochester at home, 37-36. Three days later, the nerves were tested again at Freedom as they fell behind the Bulldogs, fought back to take the lead, lost the lead, tied the game at the end of regulation, then won it in overtime, 47-45.
Scoring stars: Defense has been the key to success this season as Aliquippa is only allowing an average of 32 points per game. Offensively against Rochester, junior Carla Brown led the Quips with 10 points. In the win over Freedom, Brown and senior Evanna Lay each scored 12 points while junior Aunesty Johnson added 10 points for Aliquippa.
Remember when: While the program has struggled in recent years, winning only one game in the 2017-18 season, Aliquippa was once a dynasty in girls basketball. The Quips won four straight WPIAL Class 2A championships between 1987-90 and claimed back-to-back PIAA championships in 1989 and ‘90.
