Penn Hills graduate Raion Strader helped Miami (Ohio) end a long-time losing streak to Cincinnati.
Just a week after the Bearcats beat Pitt at Acrisure Stadium, Cincinnati got tripped up 31-24 by the Redhawks in overtime Sept. 16. Strader, a freshman, finished with a career-high six tackles and three pass breakups.
Miami’s win snapped a streak of 16 straight losses in the rivalry game, where a victory bell is awarded to the winner. The all-time series between the two times is now tied at 60-60-7 all-time.
Strader’s previous high for tackles came in Miami’s 38-3 loss to Miami (Fla.) to start the season.
Brayton shines in debut
Penn Hills graduate Lucy Brayton had a solid collegiate debut for the Saint Vincent women’s golf team. Brayton led the Bearcats by shooting an 84 during the Thiel Invitational at the Avalon at Buhl Park Golf Course.
Saint Vincent didn’t have enough players to qualify for a team score. Brayton was the top unattached golfer by placing in sixth place overall. Brayton qualified for the PIAA tournament during her senior season with the Indians.
Players get section experience
Indians junior tennis player Isabella Pivrotto picked up valuable experience at the Section 3-3A tournament at Fox Chapel. Pivrotto was seeded 12th but lost to Oakland Catholic’s Abby Santoro 10-0 in the first round.
Senior Cassidy Burical faced a stiff challenge in the first round. Burical had to go up against No. 2 seed Mollie Schlichter of Oakland Catholic. Schlitchter won the match, 10-0.
Kinney leads at Kiski
Penn Hills senior Sawyer Kinney led the Indians at the Kiski Invitational. Kinney finished the race in 18 minutes, 13 seconds to place 26th at the event. Xavier Nicholas also competed for the boys, placing 81st at 20:31.
Amanda Heide was the top finisher on the girls’ side.
Football team gets wake-up call
Penn Hills, ranked No. 1 in Class 5A, took a surprising loss to Moon at home on Sept. 15. The night was a special one for the school. The Indians had a ring ceremony for the basketball team before the game and it was also alumni night.
The Tigers spoiled the party when Josh Bladel scored on a 74-yard run in the fourth quarter to steal a 14-13 win. Amir Key had a big game for the Indians, running for 111 yards and a touchdown.
