North Allegheny notebook: Tigers golfer Jackson Walsh cards albatross

Jackson Walsh decided to go for the green on par 5 first hole at Rittswood Golf Course on Sept. 15.

His tee shot left him with 250 yards to the hole, so he pulled out his 4-hybrid and struck it clean.

The North Allegheny junior then achieved a rare double eagle albatross by scoring a 2 on a par 5 when his ball rolled into the cup.

Walsh, who plays on the Tigers’ JV team, finished the nine-hole round with a 40 and North Allegheny went on to defeat Mars, 205-207.

6 Tigers golfers advance to WPIALs

North Allegheny’s varsity boys golf team also found success last week as six players qualified for the WPIAL Class 3A individual tournament.

Jacob Phrampus shot 71 at Cranberry Highlands to finish tied for medalist honors at the Section 3-3A qualifier Sept. 20.

He was to be joined at the first round of the WPIAL championships Sept. 25 at Latrobe Country Club by teammates Ravi Desai (72), Colin Ward (73), Jake Watterson (74), Chris Hoffman (76) and Colin Rende (76). All beat the target score of 81.

Manesiotis qualifies for WPIAL tournament

North Allegheny senior golfer Megan Manesiotis finished third at the Section 1-3A girls golf qualifer on Sept. 20 and earned a trip to the WPIAL Class 3A championships, set for Sept. 26 at Diamond Run Golf Course.

Manesiotis shot 80 at Conley’s Golf Course to beat the target score of 88 and make the cut.

Teammates Amber Roth, Kayli Dings, Kirsten Karlovits and Omisa Shah also competed for the Tigers.

North Allegheny girls keep rolling

Kieran Shannon and Abigail Stager found the net to lead North Allegheny to a 2-0 victory over Seneca Valley (8-1, 6-1) in a battle of undefeated teams in Section 1-4A girls soccer Sept. 20.

Natalie Rak recorded the shutout for the Tigers, who improved to 10-0 overall and 7-0 in section play.

Girls volleyball team moves to 5-0

North Allegheny girls volleyball beat Butler, 3-1, on Sept. 20 to improve to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in Section 1-4A.

The top-ranked team in the Western Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association rankings, North Allegheny won by set scores of 25-14, 23-25, 25-15 and 25-16.

Kyra Schmidt had 11 kills to lead the Tigers. Jamie Frisco had 10 kills. Bridgit Murphy added eight kills and two blocks. Avery Butcher had five aces and 13 digs. Setters Molly Robertson and Mackenzie Jones combined for 39 assists.

Tici-Wessel advances to WPIAL singles

North Allegheny senior Laeticia Tici-Wessel finished second at the Section 2-3A singles tournament and qualified for the WPIAL tournament.

The No. 3 seed in the section draw, she rolled to 10-0 and 10-2 victories in the early rounds before beating North Hills’ Elinor Kim in the semifinals, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1.

She then fell to Pine- Richland’s Caroline Prisk, 6-2, 6-0, in the finals.

Tici-Wessel won her WPIAL singles first-round match 10-1, and beat Mt. Lebanon’s Sofia Cunningham, 11-9, in the quarterfinals. She then lost to Penn-Trafford’s Amelia Williams, 6-2, 6-1, in the semifinals.

• North Allegheny’s girls tennis team moved to 12-0 on Sept. 19 with a 5-0 nonsection win over Peters Township. Tici- Wessel, Audrey Zheng and Tia Soussou won singles matches. Siya Jain/Rebecca Murphy and Kaitlyn Zeman/Ella Mangene won in doubles.
