The Norwin girls soccer team made the most of senior night.

The Lady Knights edged past visiting Baldwin, 2-1, for their second win of the season. They broke a four-game losing streak.

Senior captains Evelyn Moore and Gabby Schoemer picked up points in the victory.

Moore scored the go-ahead goal, while Schoemer assisted a score by sophomore Alexa Kobus.

Junior Lindsay Reese also has an assist, while junior Mila Ostovich was the winning goalkeeper.

Making a run

The Norwin girls cross country team moved into the No. 9 spot in the PennTrackXC rankings.

The Lady Knights took third in Class 3A at the Red, White & Blue Classic. Four freshmen are in the team’s starting seven.

Golfers win

At Youghiogheny Country Club, Norwin slipped past Indiana in a boys golf section match, 201-203.

The No. 39 was key for the Knights. Logan Clark, Alex Graham and Preston Stoner all posted that score in the nine-hole match.

Section tennis

Junior Sophia Lepore of Norwin reached the semifinals of the Section 1-3A girls tennis singles tournament.

After an opening bye, Lepore defeated Natalie Kamer of Armstrong in the second round, 10-3. But she lost 10-0 to Ellen Liu of Franklin Regional.

Senior Jenna Walko of Norwin advanced past the preliminary round. She defeated Aubrey Orowitz of Kiski Area, 11-10, before falling to Amelia Williams of Penn-Trafford, 10-0, in the first round

Norwin alum coaching

Brian Znavor is the new girls basketball coach at Yough.

A Norwin graduate, Znavor was the Yough boys basketball coach in the early 2000s, taking over that position when he was 23.

He coached the Cougars’ all-time scoring leader, Ben McCauley, who went on to play at North Carolina State and is still playing professionally overseas.

Znavor later coached the Elizabeth Forward boys.

A technology education teacher at Yough, Znavor was a talented two-sport athlete at Norwin, in basketball and footbal. In fact, he earned the Kass Kovalchik Award as the school’s top male athlete in 1995.

He attended Cal (Pa.).

Znavor also coached Norwin’s ninth grade and junior varsity boys basketball teams.

Yough still is searching for an athletic director after the resignation of Bill Flow, another Norwin alum.

Kobus commits

Norwin senior basketball player Ava Kobus will continue her playing career at Division III Allegheny College.

Kobus, a 6-foot shooting guard, has shown a knack for delivering run-sparking 3-pointers for the Lady Knights, who made the WPIAL and PIAA semifinals last season.
