Ligonier Valley was awarded the top seed in the District 6-3A boys basketball playoffs, according to pairings released Thursday by the District 6 committee.

The three-time Heritage Conference champion Rams (21-2), who will move to the WPIAL next season, will open with a quarterfinal game Feb. 21 at home against either No. 8 Cambria Heights (10-12) or No. 9 Philipsburg-Osceola (10-12).

Defending Class 3A champion Richland was seeded third and will face No. 6 Mt. Union on Feb. 21 at home in the quarterfinals.

Richland lost its grip on the No. 2 seed after being eliminated from the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference playoffs following a decision rendered Thursday by the District 6 committee and upheld by the PIAA that requires Richland to forfeit a 52-41 victory Wednesday night over Westmont Hilltop in the regular season finale.

Coach Greg Burke reportedly received two technical fouls during the preliminary junior varsity game, deeming him ineligible to coach in the varsity game, according to PIAA rules.

The decision elevated Westmont Hilltop to the No. 2 seed with the Hilltoppers set to play visiting No. 7 Bellwood-Antis on Feb. 21 in the Class 3A quarterfinals.

No. 4 West Shamokin will play host to No. 5 Penns Valley in the other quarterfinal.

Other boys tops seeds were Altoona (Class 6A), Johnstown (Class 5A), Huntingdon (Class 4A), Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic (Class 2A) and Bishop Carroll Catholic (Class A).

The girls top seeds were State College (Class 6A), Hollidaysburg (Class 5A), Forest Hills (Class 4A), Tyrone (Class 3A), Bellwood-Antis (Class 2A) and Blacklick Valley (Class A).
