HERSHEY — District 5 champion Chestnut Ridge won the final seven bouts and eased past WPIAL runner-up Burgettstown, 56-12, on Thursday at PIAA Class AA Team Championship at Giant Center.
It was the first time that Burgettstown has qualified for the team tournament.
A pin by heavyweight Riley Kemper and decisions by Shane Kemper (152) and D.J. Slovick (170) kept the score close. The Lions led 21-12 before closing out the match.
Burgettstown coach Joey Vigliotti said he was pleased with the way his team wrestled.
“We were outgunned,” Vigliotti said. “We weren’t intimidated and battled the entire match.”
Burgettstown will have an early wakeup call Friday. The Blue Devils face District 3 Hamburg in a consolation match at 8 a.m.
Hamburg was beaten by District 6 runner-up Westmont Hilltop, 38-30. The other early winners were Southern Columbia, a 55-21 victor over Corry, and Brookville, which defeated Tunkhannock, 42-33.
