High school roundup for Jan. 22, 2020: Waynesburg edges Canon-McMillan on ninth tiebreaking criteria

It’s hard to imagine a more closely contested dual meet than the one Wanynesburg and Canon-McMillan waged in the Section 4-AAA championship match Wednesday night.

With the score tied 30-30, the match came down to the ninth tiebreaking criteria — total near-fall points. Waynesburg’s Wyatt Henson picked up five back points before winning by fall at 138 pounds. Canon-McMillan had three near-fall points, earned by Matthew Furman in a 7-4 decision victory at 182 pounds.

Waynesburg’s narrow victory snapped a streak of 132 consecutive section victories and 18 consecutive section titles for Canon-McMillan.

The first three criteria pertain to points deducted for unsportsmanlike conduct. Waynesburg and Canon-McMillan were also tied in the next five criteria — total wins, total six-point wins, total tech falls, total major decisions and total first points.

The match was tied five times, including a 27-27 deadlock with two matches to go.

Canon-McMillan’s Evan Miller took a 10-8 decision at heavyweight to give his team a 30-27 lead. Waynesburg’s Mac Church tied it with a 3-0 win over Jacob Houpt at 106 pounds.

In the semifinals, Waynesburg beat South Fayette 71-12 and Canon-McMillan topped Trinity, 54-24. South Fayette won the third-place match, 40-33. Chartiers Valley took fifth in the section with a 52-26 win over West Allegheny.

Thomas Jefferson 38, Connellsville 34 — Mclaine Stanek (126), Ben Eckenrod (132) and Kale Buckiso (138) put together consecutive victories to break open a close match and lead Thomas Jefferson to a second straight Section 2-AAA championship. Brandon and Brian Finnerty won back-to-back bouts to get the Jaguars off to a 9-0 lead to start the match.

In the semifinals, Thomas Jefferson beat Mt. Lebanon 43-22, and Connellsville topped Peters Township, 54-13. Mt. Lebanon won the third-place match, 46-33. West Mifflin took fifth in the section with a 38-25 win over Bethel Park.

Seneca Valley 40, North Allegheny 24 — Alejandro Herrera-Rondon started a run of four consecutive victories to close the match as No. 2 Seneca Valley broke open a 24-24 tie and defeated No. 10 North Allegheny for the Section 3-AAA title.

Herrera-Rondon (132) won by fall and Chanz Shearer (138), Antonio Amelio (145) and Drew Vlasnik (152) won by decision in the final four matches. Liam Volk-Klos (170), Nick Funovits (220) and Hunter Swedish (113) also won by fall for Seneca Valley.

Grant Mackay (160), Nick Marcenelle (195) and Ben Grafton (285) recorded pins as North Allegheny built a 21-12 lead.

In the semifinals, North Allegheny beat Butler 57-15, and Seneca valley topped Hampton, 50-18. Butler took the third-place match, 42-30. Pine-Richland finished fifth in the section with a 52-24 win.

Burgettstown 41, McGuffey 34 — Jacob Noyes won by disqualification in the final bout of the night, leading Burgettstown past McGuffey in the Section 1-AA championship match.

Burgettstown led, 36-34, heading into the winner-take-all finale at 138 pounds. McGuffey’s Kyle Brookman took a 5-0 lead in the first period and tried to make it stand up. Instead, he was disqualified for a fifth stalling call with 17 seconds left in the match.

Shane Kemper (152), Turner Lehman (182), Riley Kemper (285), Shane Ilgenfritz (106), Joey Sentipal (120) and Hunter Guiddy (126) had pins for Burgettstown. Ethan Barr (160), Garrett Boone (195), Tasso Makripodis (220) and Beau Bergles (113) won by fall for McGuffey.

In the semifinals, Burgettstown beat Beth-Center 48-26, and McGuffey topped South Park, 58-16. Beth-Center won the third-place match, 67-9. Fort Cherry took fifth with a 43-33 win over West Greene.

In Section 2-AA, Quaker Valley edged Laurel, 39-38, in the championship match. Freedom beat Keystone oaks 48-30 for third. Ellwood City defeated Hopewell, 39-27, for fifth.

Boys basketball

Steel Valley 73, Shady Side Academy 69 — Camden Polak scored 25 points and Ronnell Lawrence added 12 as Steel Valley (10-5, 6-2) picked up a Section 3-3A win. Grady Munroe led Shady Side Academy (6-8, 3-5) with 20 points.

Washington 59, Monessen 43 — Tayshawn Levy scored 24 points to lead Washington (10-5) to a nonsection win. Brandon Patterson added 13 and Marlon Norris had 10. Carleton Jones led Monessen (6-10) with 17.

Clairton 70, West Mifflin 67 — Don Napper scored 21 points to lead five players in double figures for Clairton (10-6) in a nonsection win. Kanye Hawkins had 13. Kenlein Ogletree and Isaiah Berry had 12 each. Braden Moore led West Mifflin (1-13) with 22 points.

Hopewell 60, Keystone Oaks 49 — Cooper Stala scored 15 points and Rocco Scipione added 12 to help Hopewell (7-10) to a nonsection win. Rob Bolte had 21 points and Frank Stumpo 19 for Keystone Oaks (6-10).

Union 59, Ellwood City 42 — Vinny Fuleno scored 27 points to lead Union (10-5) to a nonsection win. Mike Flowers had 13 and Mark Stanley 11. Steve Antuono led Ellwood City (8-8) with 10.

Riverside 61, Freedom 47 — Kevin Kolesar scored 30 points and Nathan Sciarro added 17 to lead Riverside (7-10) in a nonsection game. Tyler Mohrbacher led Freedom (5-11) with 19.

Western Beaver 88, Avella 56 — Levi Gray had 23 points, including five 3-pointers, and Noah Gray added 21 to lead Western Beaver (7-9) to a nonsection win. Gabe Lis had 21 for Avella (4-13).

Jeannette 65, East Allegheny 33 — Jackson Pruitt scored 20 points and Anton Good added 13 to lead Jeannette (10-6) to a nonsection win. Mike Smith had 13 for East Allegheny (8-8).

Armstrong 47, Freeport 38 — Behind a team-high 14 points from Gavin Szymanski, Armstrong (3-11) picked up a nonsection victory over Freeport (3-11).

Girls basketball

North Catholic 70, Highlands 21 — Tess Myers had a game-high 19 points for Class 4A No. 1 North Catholic (14-1, 9-0) in a Section 1-4A win over Highlands. Joselyn Luzier and Sarah Sawhook score eight points apiece for the Golden Rams (2-13, 0-9).

Aliquippa 54, Quigley Catholic 34 — Led by 22 points from Angel Henry and 14 from Kayla Czambel, Aliquippa (7-10) picked up a nonsection win. Hailey Drutarosky led Quigley (4-10) with 11 points.

Steel Valley 61, Carrick 41 — Soraya Gibbs scored 15 points and Abby Gongaware and Abby Tester added 14 apiece as Steel Valley (5-11) won a nonsection game.

Westinghouse 56, Ellis School 51 — Roby Epperson scored 16 points, Khamille Andrews 14 and Erin Bowens 12 to lead Westinghouse. Natalie Jasper had 15 for Ellis School (11-4).

East Allegheny 46, Jeannette 31 — Amaia Johnson scored 18 points and Abby Henderson added 14 as East Allegheny (8-8) won a nonsection game. Hannah Nichols led Jeannette (3-13) with nine points.

Apollo-Ridge 47, St. Joseph 36 — Morgan Gamble scored 15 points to pace Apollo-Ridge (9-7) in a nonsection win over St. Joseph (2-13). Brinley Toland added 13 points for the Vikings. Trinity Lockwood-Morris had a game-high 25 points for the Spartans, and Ally Swierczweski scored 10.

Freeport 55, Armstrong 29 — Sidney Shemanski scored 17 points to lead Freeport past Armstrong in a nonsection matchup. The Yellowjackets held the River Hawks (9-6) to single-digit outputs in each of the final three quarters, including only allowing two points in the third quarter. Layne Miller led Armstrong with 10 points.

Blairsville 59, Ligonier Valley 25 — Lexi Risinger scored 17 points and Belle Pynos had 14 to lead Blairsville (8-6) to a Heritage Conference win. Haley Boyd had 11 points for Ligonier Valley (2-13).
