Avonworth’s Kyros Thorpe has made an immediate impact since transferring from Central Catholic, but it’s unknown whether he’ll be eligible for the football playoffs.
The senior has an eligibility hearing scheduled Thursday at the WPIAL office in Green Tree.
Thorpe was granted regular-season eligibility when he transferred to Avonworth but he was automatically ruled ineligible for the postseason under a rule the PIAA enacted last summer. All transfers after the start of 10th grade are now postseason ineligible unless they qualify for a hardship waiver under the strict guidelines established in the PIAA rules.
In two games with Avonworth, Thorpe (5-9, 175) has seven catches for 210 yards and three touchdowns. He scored twice in Friday’s 47-14 victory over Valley.
He announced his first Division I college offer in May from Valparaiso.
Thorpe’s eligibility hearing is among five scheduled Thursday, according to WPIAL executive director Tim O’Malley.
Among the others are:
- North Catholic’s Jayden Sharpless (soccer), a sophomore who transferred from Freedom.
- Carmichaels’ Sydney Kuis (volleyball), a junior who transferred from Mapletown.
- Carmichaels’ Jackson Machesky (baseball, basketball), a junior who transferred from West Greene.
