Fox Chapel senior Robby Shymansky wasn’t going to let the opportunity to win his first PIAA singles title slip away, even after giving up an early second-set lead to Great Valley’s Sameer Gangoli.
After splitting the first two sets, Shymansky got out to another 4-1 lead in the third set to and held on to defeat Gangoli, 7-6, 4-6, 6-3, in the Class AAA tennis championships Saturday at Hershey Racquet Club.
“It feels unbelievable. I’ve wanted to do it for a bunch of years. After the second set, I was discouraged, especially with having the lead. That’s how sports goes, and I knew I had to battle through it,” Shymansky said.
“It was such a great run. To end it with a win is like a storybook end. I’m disappointed my high school career is over, but it means a lot to me.”
Shymansky, a Yale recruit, beat Unionville’s Tristan Bradley, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 in the semifinals. Shymansky finished his career with back-to-back WPIAL singles titles.
Peters Township’s Connor Bruce and Elian Ascencio defeated Shady Side Academy’s Naman Dua and Colin Gramley, 6-3, 6-3, in the Class AAA finals.
Bruce and Ascencio reached the finals after defeating Cedar Crest’s Dylan Tull and Jack Muraika, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, in the semifinals earlier in the day. Dua and Gramley reached the finals by eliminating Wissahickon’s Andrew Tran and Vidit Makwana, 7-5, 6-3, in the semifinals.
