WPIAL track and field champions earn top seeds for PIAA meet

Several WPIAL track and field champions are top seeds for the two-day PIAA championship meet Friday and Saturday at Shippensburg.

The PIAA released the performance lists to its website, and Shady Side Academy’s Melissa Riggins owns the top seed for the girls Class AA 800-meter and 1,600 runs.

Joining Riggins as a top seed in girls Class AA is Brownsville junior Gionna Quarzo in the 3,200, Beaver sophomore Emma Pavalek in the high jump, Waynesburg sophomore Taylor Shriver in the pole vault and South Park senior Maura Huwalt in the javelin.

Avonworth/Northgate senior Hayden Robinson is the top seed for the girls Class AAA 100 dash.

WPIAL champs who are top seeds in boys Class AA include Waynesburg senior Daniel Layton in the 110 hurdles, Aliquippa senior MJ Devonshire in the 100 dash, Riverside senior Calvin Wetzel in the 300 hurdles and North Catholic junior Joseph Kearney in the long jump.

Hempfield senior Jared Bannon is the top seed in the boys Class AAA 110 hurdles, joining Mt. Lebanon junior Patrick Anderson in the 1,600, Indiana junior Kendall Branan in the 800 and North Allegheny senior Zachary Kinne in the 3,200.
