High school roundup for May 8, 2019: Blackhawk claims Section 2 title

Jarrett Wright was 3 for 3 with a double and RBI as Blackhawk captured the Section 2-4A championship with a 3-2 win over Beaver.
The Bobcats (10-7, 9-3) loaded the bases in the top of the seventh but only managed one run, as Blackhawk earned the win. Marco Borello struck out four in three no-hit innings for the Cougars (12-4, 10-2).
Knoch 7, Highlands 6 — Knoch got its win, and the Knights are in.
A five-run fourth inning helped Knoch erase a three-run deficit as the Knights rallied for a victory over Highlands in a Section 1-4A game at Pullman Park and clinched a WPIAL playoff spot.
Guy DeLeonardis had a two-run double for the Knights (10-6, 6-6), who trailed 4-1 after three innings. Isaac Love and Ethan Sloane had two hits. Jack Bartek pitched 6 1/3 innings with six strikeouts to get the win and Gavin Phillips secured the final two outs to earn a save.
Tanner Nulph doubled twice and had two RBIs for the Golden Rams (10-8, 6-6) and Trent Bielak and Jett Slepak doubled.
Peters Township 4, Canon-McMillan 2 — Mark Lehman knocked in two runs, and Matthew Levy plated one as Peters Township (12-6, 9-3) won in Section 3-6A.
West Allegheny 2, Montour 0 — Mason Timko and Luke Lambert knocked in runs as No. 1 West Allegheny (17-2, 12-0) won in Section 3-5A.
Quaker Valley 13, Ambridge 0 (5 inn.) — Christian Johnson threw a one-hitter, and Isaac Guss and David Lipton each had two RBIs as Quaker Valley (11-6, 6-6) earned a playoff berth with a Section 2-4A win.
Hopewell 8, Freedom 1 — Jake McGovern and Alex Kunzmann each had two RBIs, and Josh Miklos was 3 for 3 with an RBI for No. 2 Hopewell (13-5, 11-1) in a Section 2-3A win.
Eden Christian Academy 9, Cornell 0 — Markus Williams had two doubles and four RBIs as Eden Christian Academy (9-8, 6-6) won in Section 1-A and clinched a playoff berth.
Quigley Catholic 14, Rochester 5 — Luke Evans was 4 for 5, and Alex Tomsic hit a three-run homer as No. 3 Quigley Catholic (11-6, 10-2) won a Section 1-A game.
Seton LaSalle 9, Keystone Oaks 5 — Nic Vari and Brett Wagner each knocked in two runs to lead Class 2A No. 3 Seton LaSalle (15-2) to a nonsection win.
Derry 6, Indiana 1 — In Section 1-4A, Zack Karaschak had a double and three RBIs, and Brayden Mickinac singled home two runs as Derry (7-11, 4-8) earned a victory. Paul Koontz tossed a three-hitter with nine strikeouts.
Charleroi 12, Southmoreland 8 — Austin McBeth doubled twice and drove in four runs, but Southmoreland (3-13, 1-10) fell to Charleroi (5-10, 3-8) in a Section 3-3A game. Brok Potoka doubled and had an RBI for Southmoreland. Justin Day singled three times, and Hunter Perry singled, doubled and drove in three runs for Charleroi.
Greensburg Central Catholic 11, Clairton 1 (5 inn.) — Class A No. 5 Greensburg Central Catholic (9-8, 8-2) plated six runs in the bottom of the first inning en route to a Section 3 win over Clairton (1-11, 1-9). Dylan Sebek and Alex Rodriguez singled twice and drove in one run each. Brendan McGowan had a double and an RBI. Jonte Sanders went 3 for 3 for Clairton.
Penn-Trafford 5, Chartiers Valley 1 — Class 5A No. 1 Penn-Trafford (16-2) scored five times in the top of the sixth inning to win a nonsection game.
Ligonier Valley 8, Homer-Center 7 — Ligonier Valley (13-2, 10-1) rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh to come back and beat Homer-Center (13-6, 8-5) in a District 6 Heritage Conference game. Ben Anderson singled and had three RBIs for the Rams, who trailed 7-5 after six innings. Nick Beitel had a pair of singles and RBIs.
Burrell 11, Valley 1 (6 inn.) — Luke Virag singled twice, drove in three runs and pitched five innings with five strikeouts to help the Class 3A No. 4 Bucs to an 11-1 Section 1 win over Valley in six innings. Jack Henderson went 2 for 4 and drove in four runs for the Bucs (11-4, 8-4), and Zach Miller singled twice. Shane Demharter had two singles for the Vikings (4-8, 3-8).
Leechburg 11, Riverview 1 (6 inn.) — Roman Yurjevich, Jacob Pochiba and John Sorisio had two hits apiece as Leechburg (7-9) cruised to a nonsection win over Riverview (4-10).
Cameron Curfman did not allow a hit over three innings and struck out three to earn the win. Jake Blumer added a two-run double.
St. Joseph 4, Clairton 1 — Eli Swierczewski singled, doubled and drove in two runs to lead St. Joseph (7-7, 5-5) to a Section 3A win over Clairton (1-10, 1-8).
Hayden Mallin earned the win for the Spartans.
Softball
Quigley Catholic 4, Rochester 3 — Quigley Catholic (3-8, 3-7) clinched a playoff berth with a Section 1-A victory. Rochester (3-13, 3-7) also clinched a playoff berth with a forfeit win over Cornell.
Albert Gallatin 17, Waynesburg 6 — Maddie Flowers hit two home runs, had four hits and five RBIs as Albert Gallatin (10-7) won a nonsection contest. Maria Sutton also homered and had five RBIs.
Bethel Park 12, West Mifflin 2 (5 inn.) — Haley Richert had two hits and three RBIs, and Madisen Lavelle doubled in two runs as Class 6A No. 2 Bethel Park (12-3) won a nonsection game.
Quaker Valley 12, Sewickley Academy 7 — Isabella DeGori was 3 for 4 with a double, home run and four RBIs to help Quaker Valley (6-10) win a nonsection game.
Maggie Goebel homered, and Alina Mattson had three hits for the Panthers (8-3).
Seneca Valley 10, Montour 1 — Claire Zimmerman hit a three-run home run to help Seneca Valley (13-5) win a nonsection game.
West Greene 7, Bentworth 2 — Mackenzie Carpenter doubled in two runs to help Class A No. 1 West Greene (16-4) win a nonsection game.
Penn-Trafford 7, Norwin 5 — Class 5A No. 1 Penn-Trafford scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning to outlast Class 6A No. 3 Norwin in a nonsection game.
Brooke Cleland had four hits, including a homer and a double, and drove in four runs for the Warriors (17-1). Bailee Bertani singled twice, doubled and had four RBIs for the Knights (11-7), who scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.
Allie Prady, Emma Armstrong and Jess Lichota had a double apiece for the Warriors. Leah Yoder, Julianna Shimko and Alexandra Dillner doubled for Norwin.
Hempfield 3, Plum 2 — Alyssa Schofield hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning for Class 5A No. 3 Plum (15-3), but Hempfield rallied with a run in the sixth that tied the game and scored another one in the seventh that finished off a comeback victory. Emma Hoffner was 2 for 3 with a double and a pair of RBIs for Hempfield (13-6).
Latrobe 5, Ligonier Valley 4 — Hannah Brewer hit a two-run home run to help Latrobe (12-6) earn a nonsection victory. Makayla Muchinski, Jenna Tallman and Jordan Novak had a double apiece for the Wildcats. Tallman drove in two runs. Jane Garver hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning for Ligonier Valley (10-2).
Leechburg 5, Greensburg Salem 3 — McKenna Pierce doubled twice and Olivia Shimer had a single and two RBIs to help Class A No. 2 Leechburg (15-1) win a nonsection game at Greensburg Salem (6-11). Tiffany Bruzda singled, tripled and had an RBI for the Golden Lions.
Knoch 11, Armstrong 1 (5 inn.) — Amanda Fischer had two hits, drove in four runs and was the winning pitcher for Class 4A No. 2 Knoch (15-1) in a nonsection win over Armstrong (3-16).
Bailey Rickenbrode went 3 for 3 with a double and two RBIs for the Knights.
Quinn Hughes tripled and singled, and Mackenzie Egley singled twice.
