Former Greensburg Salem athletic director Lynn Jobe to receive Ferrante Memorial Award

Former Greensburg Salem athletic director Lynn Jobe is enjoying retirement while figuring out her next adventure.

After spending 35 years as a teacher, coach and athletic director, Jobe called it quits after the 2017-18 school year.

She spent her final eight years as the Golden Lions’ athletic director.

Her next adventure is being honored Tuesday as the 2019 Michael J. and John M. Ferrante Memorial Award winner at the 63rd annual Westmoreland County Scholar-Athlete Awards banquet at Ferrante’s Lakeview.

Jobe is the first female to receive the honor, which is given to an individual who helped promote high school athletics. She is the 36th recipient of the award, given to former coaches, athletic directors and contributors.

The Ferrante family has honored an individual with an award for his or her achievements and contributions to high school athletics since 1984.

Westmoreland County Judge John J. Driscoll is the host of the event, which also is sponsored by Excela Health and the Bisignani brothers, Geoffrey and Greg.

“I’m extremely honored,” Jobe said. “It’s a privilege be part of a special group. I’m lucky and very grateful.”

Jobe coached a sport she did not play, but she became a student of the game, learned from different individuals and watched a lot of film. She developed her own style.

Greensburg Salem’s girls volleyball team won the 1998 PIAA and WPIAL Class AAA titles.

“That was a special group,” Jobe said. “We learned and grew as a team. It was a lot of fun.

“I had a great relationship with the parents and the players. Sports teach you a lot of things.”

Jobe played softball and was a cheerleader in high school and at Slippery Rock. It was in college where she became interested in volleyball.

As Greensburg Salem’s athletic director, she helped coaches grow and develop. She also is heading a project for a walkway into Offutt Field.

The scholar/athlete committee, made up of the athletic directors from the 18 high schools in Westmoreland County, will give a male and female the 2019 Excellence Award.

The athletic directors decided on 12 finalists for the awards and then voted on the winners to be released at the banquet.

The 2018 winners were Belle Vernon softball player Bailey Parshall and Ligonier Valley wrestler Robby Patrick. Parshall is one of the top pitchers at Penn State and Patrick recently completed his freshman season at Virginia.

The nominees were judged on their academic and athletic accomplishments. Pitt athletic director Heather Lyke will be the banquet’s guest speaker.
