Makenna Marisa and Bert Kendall helped Peters Township make history during a perfect girls basketball season, and Friday they received the ultimate capper.

Marisa, the Penn State-bound star who led Peters Township to the first PIAA championship in school history, was named the state Class 6A Girls Basketball Player of the Year on Friday by Pennsylvania Sportswriters. Kendall was named Class 6A Coach of the Year.

The sportswriters released players and coaches of the year and three all-star teams for each classification.

A 5-foot-11 guard, Marisa averaged 20.8 points, 6.1 rebounds and 4.3 assists, including 29 points in Peters Township’s 62-49 win over Garnet Valley in the PIAA finals. She was named the TribLive HSSN Girls Basketball Player of the Year.

North Allegheny standout Rachel Martindale joined Marisa on the Class 6A first team.

Tim McConnell, who guided Chartiers Valley to a perfect season and the PIAA Class 5A title, was named Class 5A Coach of the Year. Peters Township and Chartiers Valley became the fourth and fifth WPIAL girls basketball teams to win state titles with perfect records.

Two of Chartiers Valley’s players, senior Mackenzie Wagner and junior Megan McConnell, were named to the Class 5A first team, joined by Thomas Jefferson senior Jenna Clark and Mars senior Tai Johnson.

Blackhawk and North Catholic also had a pair of first team all-stars in Class 4A, with junior Mackenzie Amalia and senior Mady Aulbach representing Blackhawk and juniors Kylee Lewandowski and Tess Myers representing North Catholic, the WPIAL champions and state runners-up.

Rochester sophomore Alexis Robison made the Class A first team.

All told, 28 WPIAL girls made the various all-state teams.
